Times to Inspect your Chimney

Man cleaning a chimney out on a roof Time to clean your chimney for the winter ahead!

We have certainly felt all seasons here in the south over the past few weeks. We go from sunny and the high 70’s to falling below freezing. Winter is coming whether we like it or not, so before you get the home fires burning – schedule that appointment to get your chimney checked and inspected.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents should be inspected at least once a year. Having your chimney inspected reduces your chance of a chimney fire – as the sweep removes debris that has deposited along the chimney walls and removes any animal nests that may have accumulated over the spring and summer months. Check the firebox for any cracks or loose joints. Hiring a professional can give you peace of mind and assurance that your home is safe from a potential house fire.

It’s that time again folks – Summer is in the rearview mirror and Fall is full steam ahead. The temperatures are changing rapidly – if you haven’t flipped the switch from AC to Heat – well it’s coming sooner than we expected.  Living in the South is unpredictable – we can have multiple seasons in one week! Sad realization is winter is coming – it’s time for some home maintenance on your heating/cooling systems.

Air quality in your home is important and having your ducts clean and inspected yearly will help to keep dust, pollen, and dirt out of the air you breathe involves more than changing your air filters monthly.  Clean ductwork helps lower your utility bill and helps your HVAC unit function better and last longer. Mold – Microbial growth can grow in your duct system without you even knowing it, especially if you have had water damage or foundation cracks.

Give us a call to schedule your ductwork cleaning!

Fire Prevention

October is Fire Prevention month – one week of this month is highlighted to focus on a national campaign of Fire Prevention Week.  This year’s theme is “Cooking safety starts with YOU!  Pay attention to fire prevention. “Fire prevention week is observed each year in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which took place in October of 1871 – which caused devastating damage killing more than 250 people and left over 100K homeless. This fire burned over 2,000 acres of land- destroying over 17,000 structures.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires. Leaving your stove/oven while cooking is the main factor in fires especially if you are cooking with grease.

  • Never leave your stove unattended while cooking
  • Create a kid free zone
  • Turn pot handles towards the back of your stove
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close by and learn how to use one

If you need to leave your kitchen while cooking, turn off the burners. Check your smoke alarms throughout your home to assure they are working properly. Educate your family on what to do in the event you experience a fire.

The colors may be changing as we embark on the fall season, but you cannot help but to “Think Pink” this month. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – this health campaign is held each year during to month of October organized by many breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease and to raise as many funds as possible to help with research, prevention and hopefully one day a cure!

Breast cancer is most common in women – early detection is key and can save your life. Having a yearly mammogram is your main line of defense as doctors can begin treatment early. Get involved in promoting awareness and sport your pink this month for all the people who are battling this disease. Together we can make a difference. Go Pink!

Hurricane Hugo - Do you remember?

9/26/2023 (Permalink)

Hurricane Hugo Satellite image over the Atlantic Ocean Hurricane Hugo over the Atlantic Ocean heading for the cost of South Carolina.

During the month of September, we have been alerting our residents to be prepared for an emergency. September has been identified as National Preparedness Month – a reminder to prepare for the potential of severe weather - let us all be reminded of Hurricane Hugo. Hurricane Hugo was a powerful Cape Verde tropical cyclone that inflicted widespread damage across the northeastern Caribbean and the Southeastern United States in September 1989. South Carolina was a direct hit of this Category 5 Hurricane. The scale of Hurricane Hugo impacts led to the retirement of the name Hugo from any Atlantic hurricane names.

Hugo was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the continental US since Hurricane Cammille in 1969. Hugo set records across South Carolina and the storm surge heights and winds brought extensive damage to South Carolina. Forests were impacted between South Carolina into Virginia.

Hurricane Hugo left its mark on South Carolina and the barrier islands of the coast. Many people were not prepared for such an event. We encourage everyone to have a plan and be prepared for severe weather – Hurricane season is far from over – but our hope is that we never experience the devastation Hugo left in its path.

As we have entered the Hurricane season – mother nature has sure shown us she is unpredictable. Our area has been drenched with heavy rainfall – cooler temperatures and flash flooding for several weeks now. Some may wonder, will summer ever actually arrive and stay? Being prepared for hurricane season should not be taken lightly.  Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plan and your evacuation route in the event a Hurricane is predicted in your area. Follow your local weather stations for up-to-date information on potential storms that are predicted in your area.

Prepare for power outages.  Keep a supply of batteries, candles, drinking water and non-perishable food items in the event your power is out for more than a few hours.  Pick up a few items on each grocery trip because we all know the demand for these supplies can and will become an issue in the event a storm is predicted in your area.

Time to check your grill!

Warmer weather has finally arrived and it’s almost time to kick off the summer season with the Memorial Day holiday approaching. Families break out the grills that for the most part have been stored away or used very little over the winter months, so make sure you have checked over your grill inside and out including your propane tank and hoses.

Three out of five households own a gas grill – unfortunately, about 9,000 home fires occur each year as a result of gas grills. Simple precautions can save your home and dinner from a fire disaster.

Always grill outside and away from our house, deck and patio furniture. Keep your grill trays cleaned regularly and make sure your grill is located on a flat solid surface.  Keep children and your pets away from the grill at all times and never leave your grill unattended. Keep your home and family safe as we kick off the summertime season after a long cold winter!

The Silent Secrets of Mold

Mold Damage on subfloor Homeowner found their subfloor in this condition after removing old vinyl flooring.

We have had a some wild winter weather here in the south for the past several weeks – one day its summer temperatures and then winter will run around the corner and come out of nowhere.  These temperatures are pretty standard in early Spring  but we have had a very mild winter. Mold can grow at any time of the year – but it can multiply in changing temperatures in and outside your home. Mold grows from moisture – almost anywhere. Controlling mold growth requires maintaining proper humidity levels in your home or business.

It looks like mold but is it really mold? This homeowner in Hickory Tavern, SC were prepping their laundry room floors for new tile. When the homeowner pulled up the vinyl flooring they were shocked and very concerned at what looked like life mold covering their sub floor.  They immediately called SERVPRO and the technicians came out and tested the flooring.  There was no live mold , this was an old water damage that happened prior to the homeowner purchasing the home.  The sub floor was cleaned and prepped for the new tile to be installed.  If you are unsure if you have a problem with mold or not, let SERVPRO ease your mind and check your home prior to any home renovations.

Excessive Rain and your Septic System

1/29/2023 (Permalink)

Sewer backup over a septic tank A sure sign you need your septic pumped

The winter season has definitely not been pleasant to us this year. The rainfall we have experienced in our region has been above the normal and taken its toll on those who have a septic system. The normal schedule for a septic system to be pumped is on average every 3-4 years but if you have been experiencing problems – you may need to call the professional for service earlier.

Common signs that your septic tank is full:

  • Standing water over your septic system
  • Smelling sewage when you in your yard
  • Drains in your household are not draining properly.
  • Your pipes are making unusual sounds (gurgle) when you flush the toilet
  • You find sewage backup in your tubs and sinks
  • You smell sewage when running your washing machine

If you have had your septic pumped and begin to have issues you may have a clogged or broken drainage pipe or your stack pipes on the roof of your home may be clogged. Having this inspected early can help you from having sewer back up into your home.

Busted pipes in the ceiling - causing damage When the pipes burst the ceiling fell at this business in Clinton, SC

Winter officially arrived on December 21st and everyone here in the South wasn’t particularly welcoming of the season. We typically have mild to almost warm weather over the Christmas season, but Mother Nature had different plans this year. Below zero temperatures in the South is almost unheard of but they were here, and the havoc caused has been catastrophic for many home and businesses owners. The damage in many local business and homes were some of the worst we have seen. Frozen pipes that burst, along with power outages that didn’t help any situation. Christmas was different this year for many, but SERVPRO was there and will continue to be there not matter what the circumstances may be. This winter storm was an Historic Event, and we will be there for our community, now and in the future.

With the colder temperatures moving into our area over the next few days, some people may be preparing to pull out the space heaters to help keep their homes warm. When the temperature drops well below freezing our main heat sources (heat pumps) cannot keep up -  leaving larger rooms and drafty areas in your home harder to keep warm.

Always keep safety your top priority – and follow these tips to keep you home safe during these cold temperatures!

  • Plug your space heater directly into an electrical outlet – never use an extension cord or power strip
  • If your heater is an older model, consider purchasing a newer one as they have the most current safety features
  • Choose a heater that allows you to adjust the temperature and has an auto timer and shutoff feature
  • Place your heaters on a hard surface – clear of any drapes or flammable furniture

Winter is here – following these safety precautions can and will prevent a house fire!

Preparing for your feast is key to a successful Thanksgiving Dinner for you and your family! There are several ways to thaw a frozen turkey so pick the best scenario that works best for you.

Three Ways to Thaw a Turkey

  • Refrigerator – the safest way - depending on the size of your turkey it is safe to thaw your turkey in the refrigerator for 1 -2 days (24 hours for every 5lbs of turkey. This is the safest way to thaw your bird – as it can remain in the refrigerator up to two days before cooking. So basically, you can start thawing your bird the Friday before Thanksgiving.
  • Cold Water – Submerge the turkey in cold water and drain and refill cold water every 30 minutes. if you decide to use this method the turkey must be cooked immediately after thawing.
  • Microwave – use the defrost method based on the weight of the turkey. Again, you must cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

Satellite image of a Hurricane Satellite image of a Hurricane over the Atlantic

Hurricane season officially kicked off June 1st – and so far, we have had a calm season this year. But don’t let your guard down just yet! We have just entered the peak season, so the potential for a severe hurricane is still possible.

Review the plan with your family and plan accordingly as we often forget the plan that you put in place a few months ago. Follow your local new sources and local government officials. Confirm the location of shelters near-by in the event a hurricane should hit.

Check your battery stash and non-perishable emergency supplies. Always make sure you have at least a month’s supply of your daily medication. Keep some cash on hand – remember if the power is out – local stores cannot swipe the debit card that we have grown accustomed too.

We are almost out of the hurricane woods, but until then stay safe and know you can count on SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties to be there for you!

The lack of rain we have experienced in our area over the past several weeks will put a higher risk of a fire if you’re not careful.

  • Never set off fireworks inside or near your home – Use in an open area and point them away from your home, people, and pets. Better yet put your pets inside

  • If you have a pool, bring your toys, and supplies inside
  • Secure all windows and doors – including pet doors as you don’t want any wildlife setting up residences while your away.
  • Unplug appliances and electronics
  • Turn your toilet valves off to avoid any water damage and if you want to go extra – turn the water off to your home at the main valve. Just be sure to run the faucets until they are dry.
  • Adjust your thermostat
  • Contact your security company and let them know you how long you will be away and let your trustworthy neighbor know your plans too – sometimes they can be better than your own security system.

Following these simple steps can assure your vacation time will be stress and worry free! Enjoy your vacation – you’ve earned it!

Preparing for Hurricane Season

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

A hurricane with high winds hitting the coast High winds with a Huricane hitting the coast with a storm surge.

Hurricane season officially begins today, June 1 and ends November 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting an above average hurricane season this year. This number continues to increase from year to year, so being prepared is your first line of defense. Most power companies have a comprehensive storm response plan and so should you! There is only so much your local power company can do to help prevent outages. These companies are strengthening their grid, installing stronger poles, and upgrading wires, trimming trees, and placing outage-prone lines underground. But this doesn’t keep the power from going out. We must prepare for days even weeks of a power outage, especially if you live near the coast and in a hurricane prone area. Have an emergency kit ready – a portable radio – purchase portable chargers – being prepared and informed should be at the top of your list!

Safe Grilling this Holiday Weekend

Hamburgers over a fire on the grill Grilling burgers on the grill

We made it – yes winter is long gone and now it’s time to kick off sweet summertime with family and friends this Holiday weekend. That means grilling and chilling but lets all put on our safety hats before the festivities begin!

Three out of five households own a gas grill – unfortunately, about 8,900 home fires occur each year as a result of gas grills. If you have a grill master in your home, they may think they have everything under control but its more often an equipment malfunction that causes a fire to happen, more so if you haven’t been firing up the grill int the winter months.   Check your grill for propane leaks – only use grills outside in a well-ventilated area – secure your grill on a flat solid surface. Remember your grill is not an oven so never leave it unattended. Keep your home safe this holiday season and welcome summer safely!

Broken upply line from the toilet Water Damage from a broken toilet supply line at a home in Newberry, SC

Checking water supply lines in your home or business is at the bottom of the list of maintenance items - if on there at all, but it should be high at the top. Toilet water supply lines can cause major water damage if not installed properly and by a licensed plumber. The length of the supply lines is important and should be measured accordingly to the space. Example: You would not want a 10-inch supply line in a 6-inch space. Toilet supply lines can be the silent disaster starting out with a drip that can lead to a burst and the time when no one is at home. This customer in Newberry, SC experienced this the hard way. The supply line had burst and caused water damage throughout the home. But you can trust that SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties got the situation under control fast!

It’s that time of year when you arrive to your works place and remember you flipped the switch to AC because it was warmer when you left the office and with the chilly mornings of Spring you need to turn some heat on to knock the chill off in the office. This time of year most all of us are making that switch and he HVAC units are working overtime from heat to air.  HVAC units suffer from regular wear and tear – without preventative maintenance you couldn’t possibly know about an issue big or small until it’s too late. Investing in a seasonal tune-up significantly decreases the chances of an unexpected repair.  We have listed a few steps to avoid HVAC repairs.

  • Have your air conditioner’s pressure checked.
  • Clean and replace filters and equipment
  • Test your thermostat often
  • Check doors and windows for any air leaks
  • Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries

Having your unit checked can help prevent repairs, air loss and potential home fires from faulty equipment. Be safe and prepare for warmer days ahead!

Keep those Gutters Clean

Spring weather is in the air and along with the warmer temperatures we are seeing the signs of April showers and May storms. You never know what kind of weather to experience in March – seems mother nature just throws what she feels like, and we must roll with it! When heavy rains happen, your gutters can overflow. Clogged gutters prevent heavy rainwater from running smoothly through your down spouts. If not cleared of debris – you could experience damage to your roof and water damage inside your home. When you experience heavy rainfall like we have had here in the South over the past few days, make it a point to check the gutters on your home. You may find the remnants of fall leaves and debris left over.

Commercial Duct Cleaning

Air quality in your business is just as important as in your home but unfortunately this is something we don’t think about as often as we should! Clean air is essential for a functional commercial workspace. Keeping dust, pollen, and airborne particles at a minimum and out of the air you breathe involves more than changing your air filters on a monthly basis.

Good indoor air quality is essential. Failure to control good air quality to lead to absenteeism, low morale and additional wear and tear on your HVAC systems. We have listed some benefits below.

  • Improves your health – poor indoor quality is a risk to your health
  • Energy Consumption – clean ductwork helps lower your utility bill, helps your HVAC unit function better and last longer
  • Eliminate Odors– Switching over from heat to AC can cause your workspace to have an unpleasant smell such as a damp or mold smell. Duct cleaning can eliminate these odors.

We are now entering the month of March – when mother nature can throw just about anything weather wise our way and we may or may not have a warning! March came in like a sweet lamb but that has changed over the past 24 hours with heavy rain – storms and lightening. Knowing the difference between a storm warning and a storm watch can help you prepare for the threat of a severe storm that may impact your area.  A Severe Storm Watch simply means to be prepared that a possible severe storm is probable, and you need to be prepared early.  A Severe Storm Warning simply means take action that a storm has been confirmed and could indicate an imminent danger to life or your property. Stay safe and know that SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties is here if you need us!

Your Gutters Can Cause Water Damage!

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Gutter full of leaves and debris Clean your gutters to avoid water damage.

We have officially entered to month of Spring – before long we will have that extra daylight time in the evenings to get out and start preparing your home for warmer weather. We associate Spring with cleaning – from windows to walls we are all ready to get our home clean after a long cold winter. But don’t neglect your gutters. You would be surprised what your gutters can fill up with in the winter months. Be sure to remove leaves and debris from your gutters on a regular basis.  Something as simple as a heavy rainfall that comes with Spring can get backed up and cause severe and unnecessary water damage when it has no way to drain from your roof! Clogged gutters and the weight from heavy rainfall can also rot the fascia boards and pull the gutter from the roof structure causing water to enter your home and damage your ceilings, walls and attic space. Overflowing gutters saturates the ground and forms pools of water that penetrate cracks in the concrete and deteriorate the foundation which can result in water damage to basement walls. If you experience any kind of water damage -  give us a call! We are here to help!

  • Declutter your work or home space. Find a local donation location in your area to donate items you no longer use

Ice Makers - The silent water damage maker!

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Gathering ice from your ice maker. Getting ice from your refrigerator

Water damage inside your home doesn’t only come from faulty washing machine lines or old leaking pipes underneath your sinks or showers. The hidden but costly leak could be come from your refrigerator ice maker. We get ice out of our ice makers daily – it a well-known convenience we all take for granted until it’s damaged your flooring and you never even knew it! You had ice, right? What could possibly wrong? Small leaks can do undetected and if you have a line burst while your away, the damage could be major. Shut off your ice maker while you are away for longer periods of time and check your water supply lines often to assure you have no leaks. If your ice seems a little off – like not so frozen, you could have a problem.

Storms in the South

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

Snow covered yard Snow covered yard after a winter storm.

For those of us in the south we count on traditionally mild winters. Houses are often built on slab foundations and frequently have water pipes running through the attic, an especially vulnerable location.

Southern homeowners should be aware that pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls are all subject to freezing and bursting. If these pipes don’t have insulation or heat to protect them, a strong overnight freeze can cause trouble.

Homeowners in the south need to be alert to the damages of freezing and bursting water pipes when the outdoor temperature threatens to drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Although 20 degrees Fahrenheit is well below the freezing temperature of water, two factors make this the critical outdoor temperature:

  • The temperature of an unheated portion of a house is almost always at least a few degrees above the outdoor temperature.
For example, an insulated attic may be at 37 degrees or 38 degrees Fahrenheit when the outdoor temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Water “supercools” several degrees below freezing before any ice begins to form.
In research tests at the University of Illinois, water pipes placed in an unheated, insulated attic consistently started forming ice when the outdoor temperature dipped just below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 20 degrees Fahrenheit threshold is primarily for homes in the south and other areas where freezing may occur only once or twice a season. No matter what the weather may bring – SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties is here for you!

Winter Storms and Travel

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Cars traveling on snowy roads Traveling during a winter storm.

We have all experienced not one but two winter storm events over the past 10 days making us realize that winter is officially here to stay for at least the next couple of months. Hopefully you were prepared at home and if you had to travel during these events. If not, you still have time because winter is far from over. We take the necessary precautions when it comes to our home but what about your vehicle?  Not all of us have the luxury of staying home when the winter weather hits so make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle driving in winter storm events.  Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread to be able to maneuver through snowy and slushy roads. Check your tires often during colder weather. Keep at least a half a tank of fuel in your vehicle during the winter months – being stranded on the highway is bad enough - but running out of gas can be a nightmare in itself!  Keep blankets – snacks, water, and a cell phone charger in your car prior to a winter event. The weather can change quickly – stay informed with local weather alerts and your local Department of Transportation. If you don’t have to travel, then stay home and enjoy the winter wonderland with your family.

Black Ice after the Storms

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Roadway covered in Black Ice Open road covered in Black ice

The Snow has moved out of our area and as beautiful as it was, we are all anxious to get out and about when the sun came shining through this morning. Temperatures did not get out of the freezing zone today but with the warmth of the sun the roads were cleared of snow and began to dry out - but don’t take your guard down when driving. Black ice sometimes called clear ice can be a major driving factor after a snowstorm. Black ice is a thin coating of glaze ice on roadways and is visually transparent. It can blend in with any surface and it can cause dangerous driving conditions because it can be hard to detect on the roadway. Black ice forms most commonly at night or in the early morning hours when temperatures are at their lowest. Black ice can also be detected during the day when the roadway is covered with trees and has less sunshine and on bridges and overpasses.  Take extra caution and allow yourself extra time when driving.

Space Heaters in the Workplace

Space heater in an office Space heater warming an office space

We all have that one co-worker who is always cold and must have the need to additional heat in their office space. Space heaters can keep you cozy during these cold days of winter, but they can also become a major hazard if used incorrectly. Space heaters cause about one-third of all winter fires Mostly caused by a space heater being too close to curtains or upholstered furniture. This doesn’t include the people who end up in emergency rooms from encountering space heaters.

Follow these Space Heater Safety tips to help keep you and your coworkers safe this winter season.

  • Review all instructions and warning labels prior to setting up your space heater
  • Heater should be placed on a hard low surface and out of high traffic areas in your home
  • Heaters should be al least 3 feet away from any flammable items or furniture
  • Purchase heaters with an automatic shutoff and tip over feature
  • Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip
  • Avoid leaving spice heaters unattended and unplug when you leave for the day.

A space heater can be a create a warm comfortable space for those co-workers who are “always” cold but always remember safety first!

Winter is back and with a vengeance. Don’t neglect your pipes – temperatures are well below freezing which can cause a disaster if your water lines are not properly insulated. Listed below are some tips to prevent your pipes from freezing during this winter season.

  • Insulate pipes under your home and in the attic or wherever your water lines may be housed. Especially any outside exposed water lines.
  • Install heat tape or cables to your lines
  • Unhook any outside water lines after use during the winter months

Fireworks can equal Fire - Practice Safety

Fireworks Display Enjoying the Fireworks Display!

As we all gather to close out the last day of the 2021 with food, family, friends and fireworks – Lets all remember to practice safety first so you don’t start your New Year with a bang or worse – a fire. If you have planned fireworks for your New Year party have someone who is experienced.in bringing you a safe and festive display. Plan an area that is clear, level, and free of trees and structures. Never point or throw fireworks at another person and maintain a safe distance between you and the lighting area. Children should not be around the fireworks area; fireworks are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby just in case.  Keep your pets inside in a safe place. Ring in the New Year with family and fun but always keep your safety guard up.

Warm Temps and Water Damage

Disconnected Water Hose Don't forget to disconnect your water hose this season!

Mother Nature

We have certainly experienced some wacky weather over the past few weeks – one day it feels like sweet summertime and the 24 hours later the temperature is below freezing. Take the plants in and then take them out. Most of us have already prepared for the winter months ahead – firewood stacked, hoses disconnected, and water lines wrapped and ready. But let’s those temperatures get above 60 and we are all ready to wash the car and clean the deck. That’s ok- enjoy it!  However, remember those temperatures can drop overnight so make sure to check the outside water connections. If you feel the need to wash the windows or spruce up your deck on those warm days you will need to disconnect those water supply lines and drain your hoses to avoid those lines freezing and causing some major water damage. Winter is here but summer is showing her pretty face from time to time. Be a step ahead and prepared!

What’s up with my Septic Tank?

12/5/2021 (Permalink)

Overflow of Septic Tank This is a clear indiciation of an issue with a septic tank.

During the summer months and the excessive amount of rain we usually tend to get with the summer heat and storms can take a toll on your septic system.  Now is the time to check your septic system –

Common signs that your septic tank is full:

  • Standing water over your septic system
  • Smelling sewage when you in your yard
  • Drains in your household are not draining properly
  • Your pipes are making unusual sounds (gurgle) when you flush the toilet
  • You find sewage backup in your tubs and sinks

Septic systems should be pumped every 3-5 years. If you have had your septic pumped and begin to have issues you may have a clogged or broken drainage pipe.  Having this inspected early can help you in the long run.

Christmas Ball on a Tree Decorating the Tree with Christmas Balls

Thanksgiving is the official kickoff to the Holiday Season – and now that we have all indulged in the Turkey feast and you maybe braved the Black Friday crowds and shopped till you dropped its now time to breakout the Christmas decorations and get your home looking like the North Pole. Before you go stringing the lights make sure to test each strand to assure there are no lose, frayed or disconnected wires. If you have lights that flicker on and off – replace them with a new strand. Inspect electrical drop cords and power strips for broken sockets or loose connections prior to using. If you have decided to go with a live tree, make sure they are set up away from any heat source and check your tree daily to assure they have ample water. The first few days they will use more water to properly hydrate and if you have animals inside the home – they may just think they have a new water bowl with a hint of Fraser fir or pine, so it might be a good idea to assure you stand is covered. Happy Decorating and Hello December – The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

If you haven’t flipped the switch over to heat over the past few weeks, then you most likely live near the coast or you’re holding out to make the switch as long as possible.  Whatever the reason winter in coming so before you get the home fires burning make a point to get your chimney checked and inspected. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that chimneys, fireplaces and vents should be inspected at least once a year.  Having your chimney inspected greatly reduces your chance of a chimney fires – as the sweep removes debris that has deposited along the chimney walls and removes any animal nests that may been accumulated over the spring and summer months.  Check the firebox for any cracks or loose joints. Hiring a professional can give you peace of mind and assurance that your home is safe from a potential house fire.

Before and After - Soot damage on glassware Soot damage before and after on glassware from a house fire.

No matter how big or small a house fire can be – Soot from the fire can cause more damage than the actual fire itself.  Soot is a black, powdery substance that is produced when a fire does not completely burn its fuel source. During a fire the soot often becomes ionized, which causes it to adhere to surfaces like your furniture – walls and various contents of your home. The type and temperature of a house fire and the materials burned will affect the cleanup steps needed to restore your property and your most prized possessions. If you experience a house fire – remember not all is lost.  SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties is there to help clean and recover every item we can! October is Fire Prevention Month!

10/12/2021 (Permalink)

National Campaign for Fire Safety Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

Each Year October has been identified as Fire Prevention Month.  The fire prevention week kicked off on Sunday- October 3rd and will run through Saturday October 9th. “Lean the Sounds of Fire” is the theme for 2021.  Smoke alarms have been a major factor in reducing fire death rates over the last 40 years, but there is always more work to be done in making sure they remain effective.

Smoke alarms in your home can reduce the risk of dying by more than 55%. Statics show three (3) out of five (5) home fire deaths happen in home without a working smoke alarm.  Dead batteries, disconnected wiring because it woke you up at 3:00 am chirping or power to the smoke alarms are the most common factors of failing smoke alarms. Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years.

We are entering the heat season with fireplaces burning and furnaces running – Check your fire alarms – replace your batteries and make sure YOUR family is ready, prepared and safe.

Blooming Fall Mums Time to start planting your Fall perennials!

Its starting to feel like Fall here in the South – cooler temperatures – milder days and no humidity makes for the perfect start to the fall seasons.  Just like in early spring we all get excited to start planting our fall perennials – you can drive down most any street and see bales of hay, pumpkins, and mums! The colors can light up most any pathway – but when should you put those mums in some dirt? Technically you can plant your plant your perennials any time before the first frost of fall. If you are using your flowers for mere decorations and they have start to look like you’ve killed them they may just be dormant. Plant them anyway! They may surprise you this time next year.  Happy Planting and enjoy the beginning of Fall.

Check locations of the nearest shelters and make sure if you have pets, they will be welcome.

Keep non-perishable emergency supplies on hand and keep a supply of batteries, candles, supplies to protect your home, drinking water, first aid kit and food items that do not need to be cooked or kept refrigerated.

Summertime thunderstorms can come out of know where and sometimes with very little warning but there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and your family when a storm hits, and you are without power. Having a preparation kit on hand with the essentials is key to riding the storm out and not being in the dark.  There is nothing worse than looking around for candles and flashlights when the power goes out.  Keep a box of supplies that are easy to reach when you suddenly find yourself in the dark. Keep your cell phone charged as much as possible so you can stay in tune with local alerts and sign up for text alerts from your power company if this option is available in your area. This will help you plan for your power to be restored. Being prepared is key to making a power outage less stressful.

Fireworks and Fun

Fireworks in the Sky Fireworks on the 4th of July

July is almost here and many families are gearing up for the upcoming July 4th Holiday weekend. With food – family – fun and fireworks. It’s a special time of year as we celebrate the passage of the Declaration of Independence with our family and friends.  Fireworks are used in almost every celebration but if you have pets – its not so much fun for our 4-legged family friends.  The noise and unpredictability of fireworks may lead many dogs into a panic or anxiety.  Preparing your home and outings with pets can help reduce some of the stress. It is best to leave your dog at home in a safe quiet room or turn on the television. Don’t bring your dog to see the fireworks – and if you must – make sure their collars are secure and microchips are up to date. Remember fireworks can be scary for your pets – leave them at home to assure their well being and safety.

Is your Grill safe?

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Grilling burgers on a grill Get your grills ready!

The kickoff to Summer has begun – as we all celebrated the Memorial Holiday weekend with family – food and friends – let remember Grill Safety.

Three out of five households own a gas grill – unfortunately, about 8,900 home fires occur each year as a result of gas grills. If you have a grill master in your home, they may think they have everything under control but its more often an equipment malfunction that causes a fire to happen, more so if you have not done much grilling over the winter months.  Propane gas, fire dry air and dry grass can cook up a disaster you were not planning on serving up for dinner.

Simple precautions can save your home from a fire disaster.  Always grill outside and keep the grill away from your house, deck and patio furniture.  Check your propane tank hose for leaks. Keep your grill trays cleaned regularly. Always keep your pets and children away from the grill. Remember grills are not an oven, you cannot leave them unattended. Stay safe and welcome sweet summertime!

is your home ready for vacation?

5/25/2021 (Permalink)

Just a woman relaxing in the pool This is how a vacation is supposed to look like!

Do you have a home safe vacation list? If not, you should.

When we go on vacation we go to relax and unwind and enjoy time with family and friends. Worrying about your home while your away should not be on the “list” of things to do.  Putting a task list together will assure your vacation is a worry- free time away from home!

Stage your home like you are not away at all.  Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail and or newspaper – nothing says these homeowners are away - than a driveway full of newspapers. Set your lights on a timer and cut your lawn prior to leaving.

Prepare the inside of your home to avoid a plumbing or electrical disaster while away. Unplug small appliances or electrical devices and shut off the water valves to your sinks, commodes and washing machine.  No one wants to come home to a flooded house after a vacation.

Oh sweet summertime is here – enjoy it with no worries mate!

Brush fire buring Practice safety when buring yard debris

It’s officially Spring and most of us are out cleaning up the remnants of winter. Trimming bushes, cutting brush and gathering up branches and debris from the many storms that have we have experienced over the past few weeks. Chances are you have a nice burn pile ready to go, but make sure you are ready to burn your brush safely.  Keep the burn pile small, your pile may be 10 feet tall but start with smaller branches and gradually add bigger branches, this will keep your fire more manageable Your fire should be at least 75 feet away from your home – and make sure you have quick access to a water source. Never leave your fire unattended or attempt to burn your brush in windy conditions.  Check with your state and local Forestry Commission prior to burning outdoors. There may be local ordinances for open burning, so prior approval may be necessary. Learn before you burn and make safety your priority when dealing with any type of fire.

Can I plant some flowers??

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Spring Flowers growing in a field. The sign of Spring is here!

When can you start planting flowers for Spring?

The days are getting longer and finally getting warmer – we experienced some crazy weather here in the South throughout the month of April and we have all had to dress accordingly but let’s hope we are now over the cold hump and morning frost are over for the year.

Most gardeners will advise that it is ok to starting planting flowers after Mother’s Day. I am sure most of us have heard this from our own parents and grandparents over the years, but the truth is they are spot on!  Mother’s Day in many climate zones signifies late Spring, and for most the start of planting annuals and hanging your ferns.  Before picking out your favorites flowers for planting make sure evaluate the sun and shade levels around your home and planting area and pick flowers that will be sure to add that pop of color after a long dreary winter. Happy Planting and Hello Sweet Summertime!

Spring Yard Cleanup and Mold

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

Wet fallen leaves on the ground The leaves of Fall can grow into mold in the Spring.

Spring temperatures are getting warmer and yard work is in full swing over the past couple of weeks.  Planting season is only weeks away so getting a good start on spring yard cleanup will have you yard of the month ready come May. Be cautious of leaves during clean up. Many forms of mold grow and live-in grass, on rotting logs, compost piles and falling leaves left on the ground and trapped in your gutters. While they do not die with the first frost like several other allergens, they lay dormant during the winter. In the spring, they grow on plants that were killed by the winter's cold temperatures. Even on their own, fallen leaves will still grow mold. If you are cleaning up this Spring from the leaves of Fall - Wear gloves and a protective mask - this will help protect you from contact to mold that may be growing from the leaves of Fall.

Fire Safety Tips for Spring

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Firefighters putting out a house fire Don't let this be your home.. Fire Safety is key to keep your home and family safe.

Most often we only think about Fire Safety in the winter months but it’s also important when preparing for Spring! Protecting your home and family from fire any fire hazard should always be a priority.

As you begin your spring cleaning – check you filters although you may change them monthly switching from heat to air conditioning can cause more dust and debris in your filters so change them prior to keeping your home cool when the temperatures start to rise.

Check your batteries in your smoke detectors – if you can’t remember the last time you changed them – then now is a good time to do it.  Use a sharpie and write the month and year on the battery. This will be your reminder because let’s face it most of us can’t remember what we did yesterday much less months ago.

If you haven’t fired up the grill all winter make sure to give it a good cleaning prior grilling out – check for bird’s nest that may have set up a residence while you were cooped up inside.

The temperatures are warming up and Spring is near, but so is the next house fire if you are not careful.

Tips to keep your home Fire Safe!

2/25/2021 (Permalink)

A lite matchstick burning One match can cause a major house fire.

  • Cooking is the #1 cause of house fires - Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
  • Space heaters need their space - Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that is flammable and never leave space heaters on while you are away from your home.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Inspect electrical cords often – especially your smartphone cords – they tend to become frayed sooner than normal electrical cords. Replace any cords that have any visible damage or broken plugs.
  • Install smoke alarms and check the batteries monthly and replace them often – test your alarms often.
  • Have a fire escape plan and practice it often with your family.
  • Candles smell great but they are also a fire hazard – keep candles away from flammable items and never leave your home or go to bed with a candle burning.

Winter Storms and Power Outages – How to Prepare

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

A fallen tree across a highway taking down power lines This tree fell after a winter storm causing a power outage for hours while the electric company could repair the broken lines.

Winter is here and the cold temperatures throughout the South have been extremely cold and well below freezing for a few weeks – something most of us are not used too! We all prepare for the necessities like food and water – but being prepared for a power outage should be at the top of your list.

  • Have flashlights ready and accessible with batteries on hand.
  • Have a battery-operated radio so you can stay in tune with weather updates and alerts.
  • Have a good supply of firewood on hand if you have a wood burning fireplace.
  • Close off doors to bedrooms and rooms not in use and confine the family to one area of your home – make it fun like a sleepover with your friends when you were younger.
  • Keep a full propane tank on hand so you can cook on a gas grill and make sure you have a manual can opener – yes this will come in handy if you have no power.
  • Fill your car up with Gas – you may need your vehicle to charge your lifeline to the outside world.
  • Having a generator is a plus but remember to use “generator” safety.

Following a few preparedness tips can help you and your family stay safe and warm during a power outage.

Winter and Water Lines

1/28/2021 (Permalink)

Frozen outside water line The correct way to leave your outside water lines in the winter - no hose attached!

We all experienced a splash of Spring here in the South over the past couple of days – maybe you cleaned up that dirty car you have been driving around.  Did you drain that hose? Our quick trip down Spring lane was short lived as our area is back in the freeze zone.  Make sure you are following proper protocol with your outside hoses – drain and disconnect to avoid the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting.  Even if you have a “frost-free” spigot, you still need to remove the hose. Winters in the South can fluctuate on any given day. If you feel the need to pressure wash your driveway in January when the temperatures are like Spring – do your thing – just remember to drain and disconnect those hoses before the cold spell sneaks up on you again. #SERPVRO

Winter with Space Heaters

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

Surge Protector Overload - this can happen to you! Surge Protector Overload - and what can happen!

Here in the South, we experienced an unusually cold December, and these cold temperatures will only get worse.  Our central heat can sometimes leave us cold, so we tend to break out the space heater for larger drafty areas in your home that are harder to keep warm. Whatever you do, do not plug these heaters into a power strip.  Power strips and extension cords are not designed to handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat or even catch fire. Purchase newer model space heaters as they have the most current safety features. Choose a heater that allows you to adjust the temperature to avoid overheating. Always place your heaters on a hard level surface that are not in close contact to drapes, furniture or in the line of pets or children.   Following these few simple steps can help make winter a little more bearable and safer or you and your family!

One in every four house fires around the holidays is caused by tree fires.  Always place your tree away from any heat source like a fireplace, heat vents and radiators. Drying out the kitchen after a water line break Demo and drying out at a home in Prosperity SC after a water line break from the ice maker.

It may not be officially Winter just yet – but the below freezing temperatures are saying otherwise. If you haven’t prepared your home for the freezing weather – you better get busy!  It is recommended to check your water supply lines yearly. Your entire home needs to have a leak checkup to avoid a costly repair. Inspect your water supply lines and your washing machine hoses for sign of wear and tear. Check your hot water heater and all other household appliances for any leaks. Replace the hoses as needed – it is recommended to change them every 5 years even if they look good to you! Clean and check your gutters and remove any debris. Fallen leaves and buildup in your gutter and down spouts can cause major roof and water damage to your home.

Although we usually experience mild winters here in the South you need to make sure your vehicle is prepared and ready when a winter storm hits. Now is the time to make certain your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread to be able to maneuver through snowy and slushy roads. Check your tires often during colder weather. Always keep at least a half of tank of fuel in your vehicle during the winter months in the event you get stranded on the highway due to winter weather or vehicle accidents that could delay you for hours or overnight. Keep blankets, snacks water and a cell phone charger in your car and don’t forget any medication you may need.  If you are traveling a longer distance it is always best to check the weather forecast ahead of time and stay informed with weather alerts for the Department of Transportation.  If you do not have to travel, then stay home and be safe!

Taking these precautions during milder temperatures can better prepare you for the winter weather ahead and assure you have the proper supplies to beat old man winter.

Preparing your home is very important.  Protect your pipes with insulation and allow faucets to have a constant drip to avoid freezing pipes. When settling in for the cooler days of fall we often have the warms days and cool nights. For some this is the best time of the year but lets all remember that although the weather may be perfect – the threat for severe storms are still waiting and can strike at any time.  Like in the Spring, the Fall is a changing season – temperatures clash between cold, dry, warm and humid air.  This change of air mass can contribute to a severe weather and the development of storms. Staying in tune with your local weather and the potential threat of severe weather can help prepare you and your family. Check your gutters and make sure they are clear of decries and are able to maintain the heavy rainwater that may occur.  Hurricane season doesn’t “officially” end until November so remain alert and prepared for the ever-changing weather.

Our very own Kimberly Kitchens was recently recognized as the Rotary Club of Newberry’s Rotarian of the Year for the 2019-2020 year.

“Kimberly is very involved in the Newberry club and community. She joined the Rotary Club and jumped in with both feet, as she does with everything in which she is involved. During her time in Rotary, she has been part of multiple committees, served on the board of directors and has been president of the club,” said Christina Pomeroy, immediate past president. “She is always one to not only say ‘yes’ but to go the extra mile to get it done in record time.”

This year, Kitchens was the club’s Foundation Chair — helping the Rotary Club of Newberry raise money for the Rotary Foundation. She was also the Sponsorship Chair for the anniversary celebration, volunteered during the yard sale fundraiser, helped set up a booth with one days’ notice for the NDDA First Friday in November, got up before dawn to cook food for the Prayer Breakfast, and the list goes on and on.

She is an amazing mentor and truly the embodiment of Rotary’s “Service Above Self” — congratulations Kimberly, our 2020 Rotarian of the Year,” Pomeroy said.

We are so very proud of Kimberly and all she does for the community in which she serves!

Time to Check your Gutters

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Gutter full of leaves and debris This gutter needs to be cleaned out of leaves and debris.

Every homeowner has a list of things to do before winter starts to set in.  Cleaning your gutters and removing all leaves and debris should be at the top of your list.  In most areas of the South – leaves begin to fall towards mid to end of September and continue for many weeks.  The weather can change daily so if you notice your gutters starting to fill up – get started early. Late fall storms can roll up anytime and remember we are still in Hurricane Season. If your gutter and downspouts are blocked with leaves – heavy rainwater may not drain properly and cause water to back up. This could cause water damage to your home both inside and out. Inspect you gutters and downspouts until all the leaves have fallen this can save you money in the long run.

Halloween and Covid-19

Oh, what a year it has been – with all the rules and stay at home regulations everyone is ready to get back to some sort of normality – so what does this mean for all the little ghosts, goblins and trick or treating?

This all depends on your area – and the rules aligned with the CDC. Many traditional Halloween activities can be a high-risk and should be avoided. Safer and alternative ways to celebrate the festivities of Halloween are being recommended, so let’s list a few –

  • Carving or painting pumpkins with family members or neighbors outside
  • Halloween scavenger hunt
  • Putting on a Virtual Halloween costume contest
  • Decorate your house and let the children vote on the best scary festive home in the neighborhood
  • Leave a bowl of candy outside for trick or treaters

Adults and children have had to make so many adjustments over the past several months so being safe and celebrating safely can still make a fun and scary Halloween for all.

October is Fire prevention month – so what better reminder to have your chimney checked.  As the colder weather approaches getting the home fires burning will be the icing on the cake that fall is here, and winter is coming.  Now is the time to get your chimney checked. Hiring a professional can give you peace of mind and assurance that you are ready to get the home fires burning.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers found in women – but the survival rate is getting higher each year because women are getting mammograms done yearly and early detection is key as doctors can begin treatment.

Check your local community for fundraising activities – get involved in promoting awareness – wear pink and encourage your family and friends to get involved to help raise awareness. Together we can do great things!

October is Fire Prevention Month!

Aftermath of a kitchen fire in Newberry, SC What is left of the kitchen in this home in Newberry, SC

Each Year October has been identified as Fire Prevention Month.  The fire prevention week kicked off on Sunday- October 4 and will run through Saturday October 10th. “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen” is the theme for 2020.  Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires each year with unattended cooking being the leading cause of kitchen fires.

Educate your children that the stove area is a no play zone when dinner is being prepared. This includes pets. Assure all pots and pans are turned back towards the back of the stove to avoid being grabbed or knocked over while cooking – this can cause a fire or injury to the child. Never leave your stove unattended while cooking – if you need to leave the area; make sure all burners are turned off.

Check all smoke alarms in your home and make sure your children know what to do if the alarm goes off – have an escape plan!

Heat Pump/Furnace Maintenance

With the official kick off the Fall season; now is the time to prepare your home for the colder weather that awaits us all! Most of the US has seen temperatures already beginning to drop lower than normal for this time of year – which most may indicate an early winter – so making plans now can save your family from costly repairs.

Have your heat pump/furnace checked and inspected prior to flipping that switch over to heat mode. Scheduling this maintenance now could save you from a long line of customers waiting for repairs during the coldest time of the year.  The demand for technicians is much higher and the wait time is much longer during peak season – schedule an appointment now to avoid being cold this winter.

National Preparedness Month

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Clouds and being prepared Are you prepared?

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). This is recognized every year in September to prepare and promote family and community disaster planning now.  This was introduced in 2004 and is observed each September in the United States.  SERVPRO has joined with other agencies such at the American Red Cross, The Weather Channel, and the EPA to promote safety and disaster preparedness for families across the country.

Disasters have no boundaries – everyone is subject to a disaster but being prepared can be a matter of life and death. Being prepared and having a plan is essential for the safety of you and your family. Depending on the type of planning caring for you family and belongings should be your first priority. Follow your local news channels, have extra food and water on hand.  Keep important documents such as insurance policies, birth certificates and important paper documents in a safe area that is easily accessible.   Most of all be prepared!

Fireworks- Fun and Safety

9/1/2020 (Permalink)

Fireworks display Holiday fireworks display

Our last summer holiday is slowly approaching – as we wind down this crazy COVID-19 summer with fireworks and barbeques let's also remember Safety First.  Fireworks start an average of 19,500 fires each year. Having a safety plan before your festivities begin can prevent fire damage and injury to your family and friends.  Plan an area that is clear, level, and free of trees and structures. Never point or throw fireworks at another person and maintain a safe distance between you and the lighting area. Children should not be around the fireworks area; fireworks are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby just in case and never set off fireworks if your area is in a drought state – your chances of a fire are much greater.   Keep your pets inside as they can be scared easily, and you do not want to take a chance of losing your 4-legged family member. Enjoy the last hooray of summer but keep your friends and family safe.

Trees and Storm Damage

7/23/2020 (Permalink)

Tree limbs hanging over a house Tree branches hanging over a home that could cause damage in the event of a severe storm.

We all take pride in our home and curb appeal – mature trees can bring shade, beautiful landscaping and a sense of tranquility to our homes. We work hard to maintain our landscaped homes, but one storm can blow through and do more damage than one can even fathom. Keeping your trees healthy can potentially avoid damage to your home in the event of a thunderstorm, tornado or hurricane. Keeping your trees trimmed will reduce the amount of damage that your home can incur when a storm strikes.  Overhanging tree branches can fall and cause major roof damage to your home. Make sure to evaluate any branches that are weak or cracked and have them moved to avoid further damage. Grooming back dead and damaged trees can help promote better growth and keep your home safe from damage.

Do you ever think to check the water line to your ice maker? If not, then you should start. This home in Prosperity, SC experienced what damage that little hose can do when it breaks.  Ice maker burst can be caused by a clogged or frozen defrost drain, a damaged line or even a loose plumbing fitting. Supply lines should be checked regularly. Most ice makers come with a plastic line. Replacing the water line with a braided or woven steel reinforced line will be safer and last much longer. When moving your refrigerator out to clean – make sure there is enough slack in the water supply line and don’t move it out to far out as you could damage the connection. Check regularly around and underneath the refrigerator for any pools of water or leaks.  Taking the simple steps can prevent flood damage from your home.

Summer Heat and Water Damage

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

Leaking Water hose outside a home A leaking water hose can cause water damage and the costs could be even worse.

It Summertime we go on vacation, have cookouts, enjoy time with our family and friends not thinking of a possible water leak. Leaky pipes are not only a problem in the winter months when they can become frozen and burst.  Leaks can occur in the hot summer months just as they can in the winter months. There are many reasons leaks can occur in the summer months – high water pressure, foundation shifts, tress roots, a compromised water supply line or a simple hose bib leak.  Summertime also brings increased rainfall and sometimes severe thunderstorms. The ground can become saturated quickly causing damage to your septic system – especially older systems.

Check your foundation often for cracks – inspect underneath your home for standing water and if your water bill seems higher than usual – chances are you have a leak somewhere.

Safety Tips for Thunderstorms

Storm moving in on the coast Severe storm moving inland on the coast.

Its that time of year again – Sweet Summertime! Hot humid days can quickly turn into afternoon evening thunderstorms and sometimes without warning. Protecting yourself and family from the dangers of these storms can be done by following these few safety features.

Know the 30/30 rule. When you see lightening flash, start counting to thirty. If you don’t make it to thirty before hearing thunder, its time to head inside. Avoid using corded and cell phones and any electronics including computers and TV’s. Stay away from doors and windows. Do not shower, wash dishes or laundry during a thunderstorm. Electrical wires and metal pipes in plumbing can conduct lightening.

Being proactive prior to storm season can help reduce damage to your home.  Remove dead or overhanging tree branches that could have the potential to cause damage to your home.  Have a surge protection system in place in your home. This will help prevent lightening damage to your electronic and household items.

Storms are a part of summertime. Being educated and proactive can help you and your family stay safe!

Noticeable crack to the foundation of a home. Foundation crack to a home due to water damage.

We are over the winter slump – entering the season of Spring and with Spring comes rain and here lately in the South – A lot of rain! Heavy amounts of rain over a small period of time can cause flooding, septic and home foundation issues.  Water Damage is the number one culprit that weakens your home’s foundation which is the very core that keeps your house standing. Water damage that goes unattended can and will over time cause serious structural damage.  The best line of defense is to make sure your home has proper drainage to keep the water away from your home’s foundation.  Over time the soil around your foundation gets wet and dries out – this causes the soil to expand and contract. Soil changes can cause the foundation to crack, sag and weaken.  Check for moisture often, especially after extended periods of rain. If you see moisture damage to your foundation call a professional quickly to avoid further damages to your home.

Winters in the South consist mostly of rain instead of snow. Sometimes rain can set in for days and this can impact your septic system. It is common to have septic back up after or during heavy rains making it impossible for water to flow out of your septic system. When the water has nowhere to go it will eventually back up into drains and toilets in your home that can cause water damage. Signs of stress to your septic system would be surface water is showing ponds of water in the drain area, drains inside your home are not draining as quickly as they should be, toilets are flushing slowly or making sounds. You can relieve pressure on the system by using less water and reduce water going down the drains until the drain field dries out. House covered in Snow after a Winter Storm Winter Storm of a home

Throughout the US most states have proclaimed the week of December 2 through December 8th as Winter Preparedness Week.  State agencies along with the National Weather Service encourages everyone to prepare for severe winter by checking supplies and safety plans before the real weather hits.

Residents should prepare for winter weather now during the milder temperatures while winter emergency supplies are in low demand.  Shovels, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, water and nonperishable foods should be a part of your household emergency kit. Insulate pipes and allow faucets to drip a little during freeze warnings. This will prevent any busted pipes and water damage to your home.  Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional prior to burning any fires in your fireplace. Chimneys can be filled with highly flammable layers of creosote so having your fireplace inspected is imperative to avoid a potential house fire.

Being prepared can save you and your family from any unneeded stress over the cold winter months.

Water Removal from a buidling after a flood SERVPRO has you covered!

Commercial Water Damage

There are many ways that your office can flood, and as a business owner it’s important that you know what these are, what to do about it, and whom to call. Water damage is serious, and if you are not prepared or don’t have a plan in place when it happens to you, your business could be shut down for an unnecessary amount of time. Below is a list of a few water damage causes.

Extreme weather. Flooding can happen very quickly. What starts out as a small storm can suddenly turn into something larger and cause a lot more damage than anyone expected. If your commercial property or business resides in an older building, there is a chance that water damage will occur. For example, a small leak on the roof can turn into a flooding situation inside your business.

Damaged appliances. Most all office buildings have a kitchen or break room area with a refrigerator dishwasher and ice maker.  If one of these appliances fail, they can cause a significant amount of water damage to your business.

Backed up sewer lines. Bathrooms are another source of possible problems. It is not uncommon for the sewer lines to get backed up, releasing contaminated water into the building. This type of water damage is extremely dangerous because the water is filled with hazardous waste and other contaminants.

Broken pipes. Broken or cracked pipes are very common in commercial buildings, especially as they age. Always check your pipes under sinks and toilets for any leaks because once these lines bust – you have a major problem on your hands!

Ongoing maintenance to your commercial property is necessary to avoid water damage. But  water damage happens But you can trust that SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties will be there for you “Like it never even happened”

October is Fire Prevention Month- with one-week October 6th – 12th  highlighted to Fire Prevention Week!  During this week and month fire departments educate their schools and community on fire safety and to help raise awareness about fire safety and help assure your home and family is prepared in the event of an emergency. The National Fire Protection Association named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.  We celebrate this week urging families to improve their home’s safety by checking smoke alarms – 3 out of 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarm.  Having functioning alarms throughout your home is the first line of defense for fire prevention. Alarms should be placed on every level of your home – and inside and outside each bedroom, kitchen and garage. Make it a point to test your alarms monthly – replace batteries as needed, have an escape plan. We are all guilty of this at times especially with the smart phone and tablets that make our life easier we have chargers in almost every room in the house with multiple functions for charging our devices, however it is very important (more so in older homes) that we don’t overload the circuit because you could be setting the stage for an electrical fire. Some warning signs of an electrical overload circuit is flickering lights, burning smell and tripping circuits. A hot electrical outlet is a sign of trouble and should be attended to immediately. Find the circuit breaker that controls that outlet and turn it off, unplug all devices that were plugged into the outlet and call a professional to check the outlet.  Testing your charging cords can also determine if it’s the actual cord or the outlet. Keep your home and family safe!

Fire up the Grill this Summer - Not your House

As we all begin to kick off summer for the Memorial Holiday weekend – it’s is a good time to talk about Burgers – Hotdogs -Grills and safety!

Propane gas, fire dry air and dry grass can cook up a disaster you were not planning on serving for your weekend cookout.

Stay safe and enjoy these long awaited summer nights!

While they do not die with the first frost like several other allergens, they lay dormant during the winter. In the spring, they grow on plants that were killed by the winter's cold temperatures. For those who enjoy composting, the soil-enhancing leaf mold is a welcomed part of fall. Even on their own, fallen leaves will still grow mold. If you are cleaning up this Spring from the leaves of Fall - Wear gloves and a protective mask - this will help protect you from coming in contact with any mold that may be growing from the leaves of Fall! Your allergies will certainly Thank You too!

Clean Your Gutters

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Clean your Gutters!

Be sure to remove leaves and debris from your gutters on a regular basis.  Something as simple as a heavy rainfall or melting snow (not that we get much of the white stuff in South Carolina) can get backed up and cause severe and unnecessary water damage when it has no way to drain from your roof!

Check your gutters regularly - If you need us -SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties is here!

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

One Love - One Heart

February is all about love and hearts. What better way to remind us to take care of our heart than to celebrate American Heart Month! This month is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about how to prevent it from happening to you.

Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure is responsible for nearly one and four deaths, and represents the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.

Nearly half of all Americans have at least one risk factor for heart disease, but many don’t recognize the risks or know what to do to minimize the effect on their heart.  This is why heart disease is often referred to as a silent killer. There are many risk factors associated with heart disease and some are uncontrollable, but many can be prevented by a healthy diet and lifestyle choices.

Some risk factors for heart disease include a family history, race or ethnicity, age, tobacco use, high cholesterol, obesity caused by an unhealthy diet, physical activity and diabetes.

You can prevent heart disease naturally as there are simple modification that can go a long way in preventing or reversing heart disease. Eat a healthy diet, enjoy foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids – Fish is the best natural source. Incorporate fiber in your diet this helps reduce cholesterol levels.  Maintain a healthy weight -this is one of the most powerful defenses against heart disease.  Get regular exercise – studies show that exercise also helps manage your stress level that’s a two for one deal! Ditch the bad habits - Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are key risk factors in heart disease.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting regular check-ups from your doctor will help you live a long, loving healthy life!

Take care of your heart!

Cold Weather = Frozen Pipes - Are you Prepared?

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

Living in the South doesn’t always mean warmer weather and Old Man Winter is planning a visit to the Carolinas this weekend - bringing artic air that can be brutal to your water pipes.   SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties want you to be prepared!  The best way to prevent frozen pipes is to protect vulnerable pipes with inexpensive, easy-to-install insulation. There are also last-minute preventative measures you can use in a pinch, and if your pipes should freeze, there are safe ways to thaw them before permanent damage occurs. Use these tips to avoid this messy and costly household disaster.

Insulating Your Pipes

It only takes a small amount of time and money to insulate the most exposed sections of your home’s plumbing system. Insulating foam sheaths are available at most hardware stores and they easily attach to pipes with adhesive strips or pipe clamps.  Locating your main water line from the point is emerges from the ground to the point where it enters the heated area of your home should be insulated. Locate your main water shut-off valve and make sure it opens and closes easily. In the event of a broken pipe due to freezing the first thing you’ll want to do is close this valve.  Insulate any pipes that reach outside the heated environment of your home.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

If you have uninsulated pipes implement these tricks to prevent a disaster.  Run a continuous trickle of water from the water fixture farthest from the water main. If your fixture has separate handles for hot and cold slightly open both valves.  Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night.

 Be Prepared

Using these simple tools can prevent a water disaster in your home but know if this should happen SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties are here to help! Like it never even happened!

7 Fun Things to do after Thanksgiving Dinner

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

After Thanksgiving dinner, many families usually head to the living room to relax and watch football games on television. Since quality time with friends and family can be hard to find these days, consider spending the time after dinner creating a new family tradition and making memories.

After you have finished eating the turkey this year, enjoy one of these fun activities together.

Have a Game Night

When you invite guests to your house for Thanksgiving this year, ask them to bring their favorite board game.

Be sure that you have games on hand that are appropriate for all ages of kids that will be at your house, including teenagers and preschoolers. After dinner is cleaned up, pull out the games and help everyone find a game to play. You can also do a group game, such as Trivial Pursuit, Charades or Pictionary.

Head Outdoors

Play touch football in the front yard after Thanksgiving dinner." Divide up your guests into teams, clearly communicate the rules and then have fun playing a friendly game of football together.

You could also play a group game of Hide and Seek or Kick-the-Can. If you have a large area, Capture the Flag can also be a lot of fun.
If you are feeling adventurous, head to a nearby or explore local hiking trails together. You can find hiking trails in your area on www.trails.com. You can also take a family walk or bike ride in your neighborhood. Be sure to have guests to bring walking shoes or bicycles when you invite them to dinner.

Create a Family Scrapbook

Have each adult and child bring a few of their favorite family pictures to Thanksgiving dinner. Provide some cardstock, pattern paper, glue sticks, sticker, pens and scissors. Have each person create a scrapbook page using the pictures and write their memories about the picture on the scrapbook page.

When everyone is finished, add the pages to an album. Be sure to include the date and artist on each scrapbook page. Next year, create more scrapbook pages and add to the album each year.

Write Thankful Letters

Have each guest think of one person that they are especially thankful for this year. Hand out pens and paper and encourage your guests to write the person a letter telling them why they are special.
You can include preschoolers in this activity by having them dictate the letter to an adult or an older child. When each person is done, give them an envelope for their letter and a stamp.

Decorate for the Holidays

Consider decorating for the holidays on Thanksgiving evening to include your guests in the festivities. Some families pick out their Christmas tree together on Thanksgiving to decorate later in the weekend.

Another idea is to make holiday decorations together after dinner. Some simple ideas include paper chains, salt dough ornaments and bead ornaments. When coming up with a project, be sure to include young children who might want to participate and provide alternate crafts if you have guests who celebrate winter holidays other than Christmas.

Volunteer Together

Consider heading to a soup kitchen or food shelter together as a family to help serve meals to other people.

Another option is to use the time after Thanksgiving dinner for your family to help an elderly neighbor with a special project, such as painting or raking leaves. You can also use the holiday afternoon to organize your own food drive by having each guest to your house bring canned food. Have each guest collect food from their friends and neighbors before Thanksgiving. After dinner, you can take a field trip to the food pantry to deliver the food.

Have a Talent Show

Kids and the grownups took turns performing talents, such as quoting Shakespeare, singing and playing the violin. Someone can be awarded a trophy for the best performance.

When you invite guests to your Thanksgiving dinner, be sure to let them know ahead of time about the talent show. Encourage everyone, including children, to share their talents. Remind everyone to bring any props or costumes they will need for their performance.

Whatever you do with this down time on Thanksgiving, be sure that you spend the time with your family and friends. In addition to have a good time together, you may find yourself starting traditions that everyone looks forward to throughout the year.

Living Room Fires in a Laurens SC Property

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

Protect Your Home in Laurens SC From Fire Damage Caused by Chimneys and Candles

Although fires in living and family rooms are less frequent than those in more hazardous kitchen areas, they can grow to large sizes more readily and more often than those in kitchens. Many living room fires start with an accident in the fireplace, when a candle is knocked over, or when an electronic device comes into contact with water or otherwise severely malfunctions. Regardless of their cause, these fires quickly find sufficient fuel in the surrounding area. If the fire is not extinguished quickly, it can create some of the biggest restoration projects SERVPRO finds in residential developments.

How They Start
Fire damage in Laurens living rooms typically starts from one of three sources: the hearth, candles, or electronic malfunctions. Fireplace accidents are easily created if proper safeguards such as containment bars are not in place, and can produce heavy amounts of smoke in addition to larger blazes. Clogged or unclean chimneys lead to many flare-ups and roof fires. Candle fires are often relatively benign if they start while someone is in the room, but can sometimes start silently when the room is left unattended, blossoming into a large disaster. Electrical fires usually require some accident on a resident's part to start up, so while those can become large very quickly, they are typically hit with fire extinguishers before they get out of hand.

Problems Faced in Restorations
The main challenge SERVPRO faces in restoring these fires are in their size. Living rooms may contain fabric carpeting and furniture, flammable bookcases, and numerous small objects that quickly spread fires out from their origin. Also, when dealing with hearths, large volumes of smoke may present additional hurdles. Before we begin any work beyond standard mitigation, we develop a clear action plan to tackle significant problems that arise. Through our expert training and superior equipment, we can deal with fires of any size given time.

How To Begin the Insurance Claim Process in Newberry or Laurens County SC After Water Damage

11/19/2018 (Permalink)

An insurance policy is a document that lists the conditions, terms, and details of a contract between you and your insurance company. The contract can protect you by clearly outlining your obligations when you are ready to file an insurance claim in Newberry or Laurens Counties SC. On the other hand, the contract also clearly states the terms under which the policy becomes void, and the insurance company does not have to pay. Here are a few steps you can take to make sure you follow the terms of your contract.

Insurance Company Requirements

The first step in protecting your interests may be to review your insurance policy and note your legal obligations. If the pipe burst damage requires a police report, speak to law enforcement officers. Most insurance companies ask for a copy of the report if the flood or water damage is a result of:

• Burglary
• Vandalism
• Theft

The next step may be contacting your insurance company to report the insurance claim. Please note that reporting a claim and filing a claim are not the same. When you report the damage to your agent, you are notifying him or her of the damage and asking for an adjustor to review the situation.

Homeowner Insurance Obligations

Protecting your interests can also include documentation. First, contact a professional water repair and remediation service to remove the water. Ask the team to document their efforts, if possible. You may want to record the damage as well. Although your policy will probably not require you to take pictures of the damage, doing so can help you establish a solid claim.

To begin the actual claim process, fill the claim forms out and promptly return the papers to your insurance company. Make copies for yourself in case the documents get lost in the mail.

Beginning the Legal Process

Once you fill in the insurance claim forms, you are starting a legal process that is clearly defined by the terms of your insurance policy. If you fulfill the terms of the policy, the insurance company is legally required to pay. It’s the law.

Power Outages

10/31/2018 (Permalink)

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

Extended power outages may impact the whole community and the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly. A power outage may:

  • Disrupt communications, water, and transportation.

  • Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services.

  • Cause food spoilage and water contamination.

  • Prevent use of medical devices.

PROTECT YOURSELF DURING A POWER OUTAGE:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

  • Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.

  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.

  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

  • If safe, go to an alternate location for heat or cooling.

  • Check on neighbors.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A POWER OUTAGE THREATENS:

Prepare NOW

  • Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Sign up for local alerts and warning systems. Monitor weather reports.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
  • Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
  • Review the supplies that are available in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.
  • Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know the temperature when the power is restored. Throw out food if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.

Grilling Tips for a Safe Holiday Weekend

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

It happens every year. The weather gets warmer, more people use outdoor grills – and incidents of grill-caused fires go up.

Brought to us by our friends at Nationwide, here are some tips to help keep you safe when grilling this Summer.

It happens every year. The weather gets warmer, more people use outdoor grills – and incidents of grill-caused fires go up. Each year, outdoor grilling causes an average of 8,900 home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Gas grills cause more home fires than charcoal grills, the association adds. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, 61 percent of households own a gas grill, 41 percent own a charcoal grill and 10 percent own an electric grill.

Regardless of the type of grill you own, here are 9 BBQ safety tips that will keep you and your home safe for barbecuing season:

1. Grill outside and away from any structures

Charcoal and gas grills are designed for outdoor use only. However, NFPA reports that more than one-quarter (27 percent) of home fires started by outdoor grills began in a courtyard, terrace or patio, and 29 percent started on an exterior balcony or open porch. Pay attention to overhanging tree branches when you set up your grill.

2. Make sure your grill is stable

Only set up your grill on a flat surface and make sure the grill can’t be tipped over. Consider using a grill pad or splatter mat underneath your grill to protect your deck or patio.

3. Keep your grill clean

Remove grease or fat buildup from both the grill and the tray below the grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to completely cool off before disposing of them in a metal container.

4. Check for propane leaks on your gas grill

Before the season’s first barbecue, check the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas. If there is a propane leak, the solution will bubble. Other signs of a propane leak include the smell of gas near the barbecue or a flame that won’t light.

5. If the flame goes out, wait to re-light

If you are using a gas grill and the flame goes out, turn the grill and the gas off, then wait at least five minutes to re-light it.

6. Take care around the grill

Never leave a lit grill unattended. Don’t allow kids or pets to play near the grill. Never try to move a lit or hot grill, and remember the grill will stay hot for at least an hour after use.

7. Be careful with charcoal starter fluid

If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid. If the fire starts to go out, don’t add any starter fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Consider using a charcoal chimney starter, which uses newspaper to start the fire instead of starter fluid.

8. Wear the right clothing

Clothing can easily catch fire, so be sure your shirt tails, sleeves or apron strings don’t dangle over the grill.

9. Be ready to put out the fire

Have baking soda on hand to control a grease fire and a fire extinguisher nearby for other fires. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, keep a bucket of sand next to the grill. Never use water to put out grease fire.

These easy-to-follow tips will help you and your family to enjoy a safe summer barbecuing season. For those grilling over an open fire, check out these fire pit do’s and don’ts to keep you and your guests safe.

SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties Honors Father's Day

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Happy Father's Day to all our dads. Thanks for all you do!

Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd thought that it might be nice to honor fathers. Her father, William Smart, had raised his SIX children alone on his farm in Washington after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child.

Mrs. Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a “father’s day.” She chose the 5th of June because it was her father’s birthday.

The idea received strong support, but the good ministers of Spokane asked that the day be changed to give them extra time to prepare sermons on the unexplored subject of fathers.

The first Father’s Day in Spokane, Washington, was observed on June 19, 1910 (the third Sunday in June), and became an annual event there. Soon, other towns had their own celebrations.

Although the Fairmont service was the first known to honor fathers, it did not turn into an annual event, nor was the idea promoted.

Finally, in 1972, when President Richard Nixon was president, Father’s Day was signed a law declaring that it be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. It has been an official, permanent national holiday ever since.

Father’s Day Quotes

“He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.”
Clarence Budington Kelland, American writer (1881-1964), about his father

“I believe that what we become depends on what our fathers teach us at odd moments, when they aren’t trying to teach us. We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”
–Umberto Eco, Italian novelist (1932-2016)

“My father will leave me nothing to do.”
–A young Alexander the Great, future king of Macedonia (356-323 B.C.)

“A father is a treasure; a brother, a comfort; a friend is both.”
–Benjamin Franklin, American statesman (1706-1790)

“His heritage to his children wasn’t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father.”
–Will Rogers, Jr. (1879–1935)

“A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.”
–Unknown

No matter how you choose to celebrate the fathers in your life make it a safe holiday. If you choose to use the grill remember proper safety techniques. A backyard barbecue can become dangerous quickly if proper safety precautions aren’t considered.

The SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties wants to wish all our dads a “Happy Father’s Day”, thanks for all you do for your families.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

May is Skin Cancer Awareness use this information to help spread awareness.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV radiation can also come from tanning booths or sunlamps. The most dangerous kind of skin cancer is called melanoma.

The good news? Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early — even melanoma. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to prevent skin cancer or detect it early on.

This May, spread the word about strategies for preventing skin cancer and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

How can Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month make a difference?

We can use this month to raise awareness about skin cancer and help people take action to prevent or detect it, both at home and in the community.

Here are just a few ideas:

  • Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and limiting their time in the sun.
  • Motivate teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it’s important to protect yourself.
  • Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer.
  • Partner with a local hospital, state fair, or similar organization to host a skin cancer screening event.

Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

3/26/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning is in season and if you need help call the professionals at SERVPRO.

We have been on a #springcleaning drive around the office. Reader’s Digest Editors had a great article regarding how to give your home a top to bottom treatment. These simple tricks will make a big impact.

Ready to give your home a top-to-bottom buffing? Try focusing on furnishings, appliances, and carpeting. Once you’ve covered these major tasks, you’ll have your home spring-cleaned in no time.

Make doormats welcoming

Shake 'em, wash 'em, swat 'em with a broom. Give them the toughest cleaning they can take. They’re your front line against tracked-in dirt—so keep them clean enough to function at peak efficiency.

Clean carpets and upholstery

Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will need a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear—and for that close inspection by your relaxing guests. Move furniture just slightly—not out of the room or against the wall, as the old rules dictated—and place the legs of each piece back on top of small wax paper squares after shampooing. The wax paper will protect your carpet and keep the furniture legs from getting wet as the carpet dries. Open the windows to speed the drying process, which can take a day or more. If you’re not the furniture-shifting and machine-renting type, use a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner like SERVPRO.

Finish your floors

To protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, wax or apply a sealer following label directions. The simplest method: Use a combination wash-and-wax floor cleaner. No-wax floors don’t need a polishing treatment, but an occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher and add a protective buffer that could help them last longer. Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines, or both. If you have wood floors, move furniture and rugs aside, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating.

Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards, and woodwork

The walls may not look as if they need a bath—dust and soot fall to the floor, right? Most of it does, but just enough clings to vertical surfaces to warrant a seasonal or pre-holiday bath. Use a sponge and hand dishwashing detergent, washing the surface in sections. A sponge mop makes it easier to reach higher spots. Use two buckets: one for dishwashing detergent solution and another for wringing your sponge. Dry the walls and woodwork with a clean cloth.

Vacuum with intelligence

The old rules mandated that you go through the labor-intensive task of dragging every stick of furniture off the carpet, just so the vacuum cleaner could cover every nook and cranny. Instead, simply move those big items a little to the left or to the right. Vacuum the area previously occupied by the furniture and then move it back into place.

Clean ceiling fixtures

Remove dust and dirt from ceiling fans and air-conditioner vents with a cloth and a vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment.

Clean your light fixtures

A few minutes with a stepladder, all-purpose cleaner, a sponge, and a polish cloth will give new light to your life. If your home has skylights or tall ceilings, consider investing in a stepladder and extended-reach dust-and-dirt-removal tools, all of which are available at your local hardware store and at home supply stores.

Check your coils

You should clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil, usually found behind the toe grille, with a long-handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint. Built-up dust can shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. To remove dust from coils attached to the hard-to-reach back side of the fridge, carefully pull the refrigerator out several feet (newer models roll on casters) and vacuum thoroughly; finish by sweeping or vacuuming the floor area you’ve revealed. Expect to rediscover coins, bottle caps, and twist ties that you and the cat knocked over the past year.

Cleaning and Deodorizing Your Rental

2/25/2018 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to keep your rental spelling great and looking amazing, call the professionals at SERVPRO.

You've decided to jump on the AirBnB bandwagon or you just invested in a new rental property for the first time. You have the space - it’s perfect. You’ve updated the shades and lamps, added a small fridge, and gotten all new bedding. Now it’s time to start renting!

Or is it?

You’ve started this business to make money, of course. And money in this industry means traffic.  You are going to have groups of strangers in and out of your living spaces all hours of the day or night, from many different parts of the world, with all different types of lifestyles. Which means….odors. If you have a small kitchen in your unit, that presents another odor issue; some types of food when cooked can leave behind strong smells, and sometimes they can be extremely unpleasant.

The first thing a new guest will notice when they step into your AirBnB is odor. It may look really great, but if it smells bad, you might just lose a customer, and they might write a bad review...and then what?

So before you take in your first guest, lay out a plan for deodorizing your space.

Air fresheners are a good idea, such as plug-ins. And refreshing your carpet with baking soda or a dry carpet cleaner with a great scent will really help, too. Many of these products are made with ingredients that fight against mold and mold-damage, which is one of the things that creates bad odors.

If you plan on having guests during the times of the year when it can get wet, such as spring or winter, you will have to keep an eye out for water damage and damp in your unit, caused by leaks and foot traffic. If carpets stay damp, mold sets in, and your AirBnB can get pretty musty with that moldy smell! It won’t make a great impression on your guests, that’s for sure.

During warmer weather, leaving doors and windows open between guests can really help the odor issue. Sunshine is a great deodorizer for many unpleasant smells.

One of the best ways to keep your AirBnB smelling great and looking amazing is to hire SERVPRO professionals to come in and do the job. They can de-odorize your carpets and draperies, check for mold or water damage, and if mold has started to grow and spread they can stop it in its tracks.

This Valentine’s Day Show Your Carpet Some Love

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

A great way to spoil your significant other and yourself is to invest in a professional carpet cleaning.

This Valentine’s Day show your carpet some love with these easy steps.

On Valentine’s Day, according to NRF’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights, U.S. consumers are expected to spend an average $136.57, while total spending is expected to reach $18.2 billion. A great way to spoil your significant other and yourself is to invest in a professional carpet cleaning.

Use doormats. The humble doormat does wonders to reduce the amount of sand and dirt tracked into the home. Invest a few dollars in doormats to expand the life of your carpet and keep it clean longer.

Vacuum daily. Yes – daily. If you have difficulty getting to the daily task of vacuuming, then consider purchasing an inexpensive robotic vacuum like those made by iRobot. Daily vacuuming helps pick up dirt and debris before it sinks deep into the carpet. Less dirt expands the life of your carpet.

Clean spots and spills immediately. Not only will a quick clean reduce the rate of absorption but it also helps reduce the bacteria and other problems associated with a spill.

Avoid the hype. A lot of products on the market claim to remove stains, spills and odors but simply mask them or drive them deeper. The stains eventually re-appear looking worse than ever. Don’t spend your hard earned money on inferior products when for just a little more money you can have your carpets professionally cleaned with top quality products by SERVPRO professionals.

Use deep extraction. Deep carpet cleaning is essential to remove deep set dirt, dust, pollen, and other pollutants but don’t add to the problem by allowing the use of harmful chemicals. Instead, ask us about our environmentally friendly “green” carpet cleaning solutions.

Deodorize. Even when a carpet looks clean it can harbor harmful bacteria that give off unpleasant odors. Ask about enzymatic cleaning products capable of eliminating – not masking – odors.

Grooming your carpet. Over time carpets tends to become impacted due to constant traffic and dirt so it is a good idea to have the carpet raked and groomed after a deep cleaning. You might be surprised to find out how good your carpet looks after it has been professionally cleaned and groomed.

Southern Homes Particularly Vulnerable During Cold Temperatures

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

For those of us south of the Mason Dixon line we count on traditionally mild winters.

  1. The temperature of an unheated portion of a house is almost always at least a few degrees above the outdoor temperature.
For example, an insulated attic may be at 37 degrees or 38 degrees Fahrenheit when the outdoor temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Water “supercools” several degrees below freezing before any ice begins to form.

These suggestions for homeowners in southern states will help them prevent freezing pipe damage:

  • Pipes in attics and crawl spaces should be protected with insulation or heat. Pipe insulation is available in fiberglass or foam sleeves. Home centers and hardware stores have sleeves providing one-eighth-of-an-inch to five-eighths-of an inch of insulation; specialty dealers have products that provide up to two inches of insulation. (Check the Yellow Pages under “Insulation” or “Plumbing Supplies” for sources.)
  • Heating cables and tapes are effective in freeze protection. Select a heating cable with the Underwriters Laboratories label and a built-in thermostat that turns the heat on when needed (without a thermostat, the cable has to be plugged in each time and might be forgotten). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.
  • Doors on cabinets under kitchen and bathroom sinks should be left open during cold spells to allow the warmer air of the room to circulate around the pipes.
  • Exterior pipes should be drained or enclosed in two-inch fiberglass insulation sleeves.
  • Pipes leading to the exterior should be shut off and drained at the start of the winter. If these exterior faucets do not have a shut-off valve inside the house, have one installed by a plumber.
  • Hoses should be removed and stored inside during the winter.
  • Let faucets drip slowly to keep water flowing through pipes that are vulnerable to freezing. Ice might still form in the pipes, but an open faucet allows water to escape before the pressure builds to where a pipe can burst. If the dripping stops, it may mean that ice is blocking the pipe; keep the faucet open, since the pipe still needs pressure relief.

Important Business Lessons from Winnie The Pooh

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

Winnie the Pooh is a children’s classic tale about a honey – loving bear and his adventures with Christopher Robin.

National Winnie the Pooh Day is January 18.

Winnie the Pooh is a children’s classic tale about a honey – loving bear and his adventures with Christopher Robin. Generations of kids and adults have been inspired by the lovable bear and his friends. In honor of National Winnie the Pooh Day here are some quotes that can be used by every business owner and their employees.

“Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That’s the problem.” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Listen to the customer, no really listen to the customer. Sometimes we feel like we have been doing this for so long and we know exactly what the customer will say. You might be right but by listening to what the customer has to say you can address their concern and you might learn additional information that could either help with other services or offer additional insight.

“If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Persistence will eventually be rewarded. Everyone has heard the old adage patience is a virtue. Unfortunately it is one that not many of us have. It’s easy to write someone off after the third or fourth time you’ve taken the time to quote a job only for the customer to not call you back. When the right time comes or after a few mishaps with less experienced companies the customer will be ready to invest in you.

“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like “What about lunch?” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

There is a reason why people like to say keep it simple. Customers and potential partners like to feel comfortable with what you are doing especially if they are paying a lot of money for the service. In the office our professionals often talk about the dehuge but in front of customers we always use the proper name of dehumidifier. If you use industry jargon it can be difficult for the customer to understand what you are doing and have the faith that it is being done correctly.

“You never can tell with bees.” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Customers can be fickle and every single one of them is different. Stay in touch with your customers and keep a finger on the pulse. If you notice your customers are asking about a facebook page and you don’t have one, you should consider getting one today. We like to stay on top of recent trends in the industry and up on the latest advances on technology to stay relevant to our customer base. The quicker and less painful you can make the process for the customer the happier they will be.

“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” – A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Tips to Thaw a Frozen Pipe

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

Freezing temps turns lead to frozen pipes. Use these tips to help get the water flowing and avoid burst pipes.

Thawing a frozen water pipe quickly is important. However, it is just as important to thaw the frozen pipe correctly. Here are seven tips to follow to help you get the water flowing and to help you avoid a burst pipe and potentially damaging flood at your property.

Tip 1: Locate the Frozen Pipe
In order to thaw a frozen pipe, you must first determine which pipe or pipes are frozen. Turn on the faucets in your property.

If no water comes out, or only a slight trickle escapes, then a pipe leading to the faucet is likely frozen. If one pipe is frozen, there is a chance others have frozen also.

If the pipes are exposed, such as pipes under sinks, in basements or along the exterior of the house, you may be able to see the frozen portion of the pipe. Frozen pipes often have frost on them or may have a slight bulge. If the blockage is located in part of the pipe that you have access to, you will have more options for easily thawing the pipe than if the frozen portion is enclosed behind a wall.

Tip 2: Open the Faucet
Before you begin attempting to thaw a frozen pipe, you will want to open the faucet that the pipe feeds water into. Make sure to open both the hot and cold handles. This will help to relieve pressure in the system and will allow the water to escape once you begin to thaw the pipe.

Tip 3: Where to Begin the Thawing Process
You should always begin the thawing process near the faucet then work your way down to the blockage.

This will help ensure that the melting ice and steam is able to escape through the open faucet. If you start the thawing process closer to the blockage, the melting ice could get stuck behind the blockage, creating more pressure in the pipe and increasing the chances the pipe will burst.

Tip 4: Thawing Exposed Pipes
If the frozen pipe is located in an area you can easily access, you have several options for attempting to thaw the pipe.

You should continue to apply the heat until the water escaping from the faucet returns to full strength. Here are four options for thawing an exposed pipe.

  • Hair Dryer- One of the easiest ways to thaw a pipe is by using a hair dryer. Simply turn the dryer on and point the heat at the pipe, beginning with the portion closest to the faucet. As with any electrical product, take the proper precautions and avoid coming into contact with water when operating the device.
  • Heat Lamp or Portable Space Heater- Another method to thaw the pipe is to use a heat lamp or portable space heater. Position the device so that the heat is able to reach the frozen pipe. This indirect heat can help to quickly thaw a pipe. Again, make sure to comply with the safety measures and precautions on the device you are using and keep the device away from water..
  • Hot Towels- Another way to thaw a frozen pipe is to wrap towels that have been dipped in hot water around the pipe. This can help to slowly thaw the blockage.
  • Electrical Heating Tape- A final option is to apply electrical heating tape directly to the pipe. This tape distributes heat throughout the pipe. You can purchase electrical heating tape that you plug in and unplug as needed or you can purchase heating tape that shuts off on its own.

Tip 5: Thawing Enclosed Pipes
If the frozen pipe is located in an area that you cannot easily access, you have three options for thawing the pipe.

  • Turn the Heat Up in the Property- You can attempt to thaw the frozen pipe by increasing the temperature in the property. Turning the thermostat up may be all that is needed to allow the ice blockage to melt.
  • Infrared Lamp- If you know where in the wall the frozen pipe is located, you can attempt to thaw the blockage by placing an infrared lamp in front of the portion of the wall where the pipe is located. The heat from the lamp may be able to penetrate the wall and allow the pipe to defrost.
  • Cut Out a Section of the Wall- If you are comfortable doing so, you can cut out the section of the drywall in front of the frozen pipe so that you can easily access the pipe. You can then use one of the methods for thawing out an enclosed pipe listed above.

Tip 6: Things to Avoid
Never attempt to thaw a pipe using an open flame, such as a propane torch. This can not only damage the pipe, it can also start a fire in your property.

Tip 7: If the Pipe Bursts
If a frozen water pipe does burst, the first thing you should do is shut off the main water line into your property. This will prevent additional water from flowing and damaging your property. You should know where the shut-off valves are for each of your properties and for each unit. There are usually smaller shut-off valves located near sinks and toilets, but the main shut-off valve is often located near the water meter.

Call a Professional
Call a Professional- If you are unable to thaw the pipe, unable to locate the frozen pipe, do not feel comfortable thawing a pipe yourself or if a pipe bursts, you should call a plumber or other professional. They will be able to remedy the problem for you.
Risks of Thawing a Frozen Pipe
There are two main risks you should be aware of when attempting to thaw a frozen water pipe.

Fire- When using any heat source to thaw the frozen pipe, you can run the risk of starting a fire. Make sure to follow all safety instructions and never leave the product unattended.

Burst Pipe- If you do not begin the thawing process correctly, you could cause the pipe to burst. Always start thawing closest to the faucet.

Great tips for Christmas Lights

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

Don’t leave Christmas lights running when you go to bed at night or when you leave the house.

Newberry and Laurens county houses are all lit up with Christmas lights. It is a beautiful sight to behold. Whether stringing lights across your roof and around your home or using them indoors, take a few moments to run through a quick safety checklist.

  • Before you string up a single strand of lights, carefully check them for cracked cords frayed ends or loose connections.
  • The combination of shorts in electrical lights and a tinder-dry tree can be deadly. There are 250 Christmas tree fires and 14 related deaths each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. So keep your tree well-watered. Not only will it stay fresh and green, but it might also keep your house from burning down.
  • Modern lights have fused plugs, preventing sparks in case of a short circuit. Ditch old strands of lights that don’t have fuses and get a set of newer, safer lights.
  • Don't connect more than three strands of mini-string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs.
  • If bulbs have burned out, replace them right away, but make sure you use the correct wattage bulbs.
  • Water and debris can get into outdoor sockets, so make sure outdoor lights are plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet to reduce the risk of shorts and shocks. Hire a licensed electrician if you need to install GFCI outlets.
  • Keep an eye on extension cords, as they can occasionally overheat. Just touch-test the cord. If it’s hot, unplug it.
  • Don’t use tacks, nails or screws to hang lights, which can pierce the cable and become electrified. Use insulated hooks instead.
  • When running extension cords along the ground, make sure to elevate plugs and connectors with a brick to keep snow, water and debris out of the connections.
  • Tape down any ground-level extensions cords to prevent people from tripping over them.
  • Check to make sure lights have been rated by a testing laboratory. You can see a list of federally recognized labs on the OSHA website.
  • Not all lights are rated for outdoor use. Indoor lights often have thinner insulation, which can become cracked and damaged when exposed to the elements outdoors. So make sure the ones you string up on the house belong out there.
  • Don’t leave Christmas lights running when you go to bed at night or when you leave the house.
  • When you put your lights back into storage after the holidays, make sure to place them in a well-sealed container to prevent possible water damage and to block hungry rodents looking to turn the cords into lunch.

These tips will help you stay safe and prevent fires. Of course, if you do have a fire, call 9-1-1. Follow these fire safety tips and call SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties at (803) 276-0290 if you need help with professional clean-up.

This holiday make your office smell good, not overpowering

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

Make your office appealing not overpowering by using aromatherapy.

We notice if something smells particularly bad or particularly good, but average smells don't usually generate a lot of notice. However, scent can actually affect your mood, for better or worse. That's why it's important to ensure that your office smells good, but not overpowering.

Deodorization and Odor Removal

The first step to making an office smell good is to sniff out the source of any negative odors. This can be surprisingly difficult, as the culprit might be hiding in the walls, ceiling, or floor. Here at SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties, we're pros at finding and eliminating the source of any negative odors.

Once we've determined what's causing an unpleasant odor in your office space, we use industry-leading deodorization methods to target and remove both the negative odor and its source.

Adding in Positive Scents

While removing an odor can make a huge difference in the smell of a space and on employees' moods, it often isn't enough. Olfactory bulbs, which are the parts of our body that process scents, have a direct effect on the parts of the brain which process emotion and learning. This means that adding positive scents to the office can make working there an incredibly pleasant experience, and can also function to improve productivity!

Scents proven to increase mood and focus are:

Lemon, Jasmine, Rosemary, Peppermint

  • Lemon can promote concentration and produce calming effects. It also contains natural antibacterial properties, which can be a lifesaver for offices!
  • Jasmine has been shown to lift your mood by producing feelings of confidence and increasing optimism and energy.
  • Rosemary helps to improve focus and clarity as well as fighting physical tiredness – great effects for a workplace to have.
  • Peppermint increases concentration, focus, and acts as an energy booster to help you come up with brilliant ideas.

Just be careful not to overdo any aromatherapy, as too much scent in the workplace can cause productivity to drop or irritate allergies.

If you have a need for odor removal or deodorization services in the Newberry or Laurens area, SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties has the technical experience, know-how, and professional savvy to make your office smell brand new again. Contact us today to see how we can help your business smell its best!

A Safe Thanksgiving is a Happy Thanksgiving

11/18/2017 (Permalink)

Putting too much oil in the fryer or dropping in a frozen or partially thawed turkey lead to most turkey fryer fires.

As you gather to celebrate Thanksgiving with your friends and family, at SERVPRO we want to help keep you and your loved ones safe from fire hazards.

According to data from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA,  an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings occur annually in the United States, resulting in an estimated average of five deaths, 25 injuries, and $21 million in property loss each year. The leading cause of all Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings is cooking.

The USFA recommends the following tips to keep your holiday safe.

  • Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them if they are 10 years old or older.
  • Keep a close watch on your cooking. You should never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Keep oven food packaging and other combustibles away from burners and heat sources.
  • Heat cooking oil slowly and watch it closely; it can ignite quickly.
  • Don't wear loose sleeves while working over hot stove burners - they can melt, ignite or catch on handles of pots and pans spilling hot oil and other liquids.
  • Have a "kid-free zone" of at least three-feet around the stove and areas where hot foods or drinks are prepared or carried.
  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.

Thanksgiving just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without the turkey.  And deep-fried turkey has become a favorite Thanksgiving tradition in many households.  But if used improperly, an overloaded fryer can easily tip over and set an entire house ablaze.  USFA offers the following helpful tips to backyard chefs who plan to deep-fry a turkey for Thanksgiving:

  • Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors a safe distance from buildings and any other flammable materials.
  • Never use turkey fryers in a garage or on a wooden deck.
  • Make sure the fryers are used on a flat surface to reduce accidental tipping.
  • Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do not have thermostat controls. If you do not watch the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.
  • Never let children or pets near the fryer even if it is not in use. The oil inside the cooking pot can remain dangerously hot hours after use.
  • To avoid oil spillover, do not overfill the fryer.
  • Use well-insulated potholders or oven mitts when touching pot or lid handles. If possible, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil splatter.
  • Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and be careful with marinades. Oil and water do not mix, and water causes oil to spill over causing a fire or even an explosion hazard.
  • The National Turkey Federation (NTF) recommends thawing the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every five pounds in weight.
  • Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water to extinguish a grease fire. If the fire is manageable, use your all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire increases, immediately call the fire department for help.

Newberry and Lauren County Residents: Tips for a safe Halloween

10/30/2017 (Permalink)

If you choose to use candle decorations, make sure to keep them well attended at all times.

Children dressed in costumes excitedly running door to door to trick-or-treat, festive decorations like glowing jack-o-lanterns, paper ghosts and dried cornstalks adorning front porches – these are some of the classic hallmarks of Halloween that make the holiday special for kids and adults alike.

Unfortunately, these Halloween symbols and activities can also present lurking fire risks that have the potential to become truly scary. But by planning ahead, you can help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Taking simple fire safety precautions can help ensure your holiday remains festive and fun!

Halloween by the numbers

  • From 2009-2013, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 860 reported home structure fires per year.
  • Nearly half of decoration fires in homes occurred because the decorations were too close to a heat source.
  • These fires caused an estimated average of one civilian death, 41 civilian injuries and $13 million in direct property damage per year.
  • Forty-one percent of these incidents were started by candles; one-fifth began in the living room, family room, or den.

Improve the safety of your Halloween by following these tips from NFPA:

-Costumes: When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long-trailing fabric. If you are making your own costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or flame.

-Visibility: Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costumes. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so he/she can see clearly out of it.

-Flammable decorations: Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.

-Candles/jack-o-lanterns: It is safest to use a glow stick or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. If you choose to use candle decorations, make sure to keep them well attended at all times. Do not leave them near flammable objects or where trick-or-treaters may walk. Remind your children to avoid open flames. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit.

- Exits: Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

Tornado Basics

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Strong winds also came with tornado warnings in Cheraw. Chris Jackson took this photo in Chesterfield County.

Tornado Basics

Tornadoes have caused a lot of destruction in many towns across the United States. South Carolina averages 14 tornadoes per year, resulting in an average of 1 fatalities. Counties in a high risk tornado area include Bamberg County, SC, Saluda County, SC and Richland County, SC. The largest tornado on record occurred on 04/08/1957, measuring a 4 on the Fujita-Pearson scale. Although, we cannot prevent a tornado, we can be more knowledgeable of what a tornado is and the signs of a tornado coming.

Tornadoes are considered nature’s most fierce storms and is formed from a violently narrow rotating column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground. Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down and the air may become very still. A tornadoes location may be marked by a cloud of debris even if the funnel is not visible.

Tornadoes may cause devastating fatalities and damage to many homes and neighborhoods in the matter of seconds.

According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), “About 1,200 tornadoes hit the U.S yearly.”

Tornadoes are most likely to be seen during May into early June for the Southern Plains and for the Northern plains and upper Midwest, tornadoes are more likely to be seen in June or July. Although, these are the peak tornado seasons, tornadoes can happen at any time of the year. Tornadoes can also happen at any time of the day or night, but are most likely to hit between 4-9 p.m.

Key Terms:

Tornado Watch: the conditions are favorable for a tornado.

Tornado Warning: a tornado has been reported, you should seek shelter.

Air Pressure: is the weight of a column of air that extends from the ground to the top of the atmosphere.

Funnel Cloud: a rotating column of wind that has not touched the ground (funnel clouds are called tornadoes when they reach the ground).

Multi-Vortex Tornado: a tornado that has two or more vortices that circle the center of a larger tornado.

Tornado Alley: an area in the United States where tornadoes are more likely to develop.

October is Fire Prevention Month

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that fires kill more than 4,000 Americans each year and approximately injure 20,000 more. U.S. fire departments respond to nearly 2 million fires each year, with three-quarters of them occurring in residences.

This month, make sure your home is protected from (and your family is prepared for) a fire. Here are 10 simple tips to help you avoid fires and reduce the risk of injury should one occur:

1) Smoke Alarms – These are still a very important addition to your home. Smoke alarms are widely available and inexpensive. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test it monthly.

2) Prevent Electrical Fires – Don’t overload circuits or extension cords. Cords and wires should never be placed under rugs or in high traffic areas. Avoid loose electrical connections by checking the fit of the plug in the wall outlet. If the plug loosely fits, inspect the outlet right away. A poor connection between the plug and the outlet can cause overheating and can start a fire in minutes.

3) Keep Plugs Safe – Unplug all appliances when not in use. Follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions and use your senses to spot any potential disasters. If a plug is overheating, smells strange, shorts out or sparks – the appliance should be shut off immediately, then replaced or repaired.

4) Alternate Heaters – Make sure there is ample space around any portable heating unit. Anything that could catch fire should be at least three feet away. Inspect your chimney annually and use fire screens to help keep any fires in the fireplace.

5) Fire Safety Sprinklers – When combined with working smoke alarms, home fire sprinklers greatly increase your chance of surviving a fire. Sprinklers are affordable and they can increase property value and lower insurance rates.

6) Create An Escape Route – Create and practice your escape plan with your family from every room in the house. Practice staying low to the floor and checking for hot doors using the back of your hand. It’s just like a routine school fire drill – but in your home.

7) Position Appliances Carefully – Try to keep TV sets, kitchen and other appliances away from windows with curtains. If there is a wiring problem, curtains can spread a fire quickly. Additionally, keeping your appliances away from water sources (like rain coming in from windows) can help prevent wiring damage which can lead to a fire.

8) Clean Dryer Vents – Clothes dryers often start fires in residential areas. Clean the lint filter every time you start a load of clothes to dry or after the drying cycle is complete. Make sure your exhaust duct is made of metal tubing and not plastic or foil. Clean the exhaust duct with a good quality dryer vent brush to prevent blockage & check for lint build up behind the dryer at least twice a year.

9) Be Careful Around the Holidays – If you fill your home with lights during the holiday season, keep them away from anything that can easily catch fire. Check all of your lights prior to stringing them up and dispose of anything with frayed or exposed wires.

10) Conduct Regular Inspections – Check all of your electronic equipment and wiring at least once a month. Taking a little time to do this each month can really pay off.

Following these simple tips could potentially save your life or the life of a loved one. Pass this list on to your friends and family and make this fire prevention month count!

Hurricane Irma Preparation

9/7/2017 (Permalink)

Hurricane image from space

With Hurricane Irma approaching now is the time to prepare. It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Based on the current trajectory of Hurricane Irma, the primary impact area is Florida and potentially South Carolina and North Carolina.

Even areas well away from the coastline can be threatened by dangerous flooding, destructive winds and tornadoes from these storms.

Determine Your Risk

Hurricanes bring many hazards to U.S. coastlines and inland areas, including storm surge along the coast, inland flooding due to heavy rainfall, tornadoes, strong wind, rip currents and large waves.

Develop an Evacuation Plan

Find out today if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. Plan where you’ll go and how you would get there. Leave immediately if ordered to evacuate and be sure to plan for your pets.

Assemble Disaster Supplies

Get your supplies before the hurricane hits. Many stores are experiencing shortages. Have enough food and water for each person for at least one week. Be sure to fill your prescriptions and have medicine on hand. Radios, batteries and phone chargers are also must haves. Gas up your vehicle and extra cash on hand.

Get Insurance Checkup

Check in with your insurance agent well beforehand, remember that flood insurance must be obtained separately. Prepare your home/vehicles according to your policy, and know where your insurance documents are located – take them with you if you evacuate. Visit floodsmart.gov for more information.

Strengthen Your Home

There is a lot you can do around your home to help protect it from the strong winds that come with hurricanes. Well ahead of the approaching storm, trim trees on your property, shop for approved window coverings, collect loose outdoor items, secure all doors on you property, and find a safe location for your vehicle.

Help Your Neighbor

Many people rely on the assistance of neighbors before and after hurricanes. Help your neighbors collect the supplies they’ll need before the storm. Assist them with evacuation if ordered to do so or check on them after it’s safe for you to head outside.

Complete your Written Plan

Writing down your plan will help you avoid mistakes when faced with an emergency and ensure everyone in your home is prepared for the next storm.

411 on Carpet Cleaning

Daily, we use our carpet, not even thinking about how dirty it is. Our carpets are like filters, trapping dust, gases, animal hair, and other soils. There are many preventative things you may do to keep your carpet clean, such as, regular vacuuming, spot removal, and having your carpets professionally cleaned.

Here are the top reasons to have carpets cleaned year-round:

  1. It prolongs the life of the carpeting. Cleaning your carpet regularly using the extraction method can increase the life of carpets significantly.
  2. Having your carpets cleaned protects indoor air quality. Carpets trap airborne pollutants.
  3. It makes your carpet easier to maintain. When carpets are regularly cleaned, vacuuming will remove most dry soils.
  4. Cleaning your carpet will remove spots and stains. As with other soils, spots and stains can attract more soiling. Removing them promptly protects carpeting from damage.
  5. Moist soiling of carpets can result in the buildup of several unhealthy contaminants. Cleaning your carpets prevents buildup of allergens and bacteria.
  6. It will enhance the appearance of your home or business.
  7. It will make your work environment feel cleaner.
  8. Regular carpet cleaning makes carpeting look and feel clean and fresh.
  9. It removes dust mites and bedbugs that may have found a home in your carpet.
  10. If you have a warranty, it will maintain your carpet warranty. Most carpet warranties require that carpets be cleaned using the extraction method usually every 12-18 months.

SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties offers professional cleaning that can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets.

Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing that dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is below the surface down near the base, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged. We will get the job done right!

We offer a range of specialized cleaning methods:

  • Bonnet cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot water extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe precondition and rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

Does your Newberry or Laurens County Home Have A Mold Problem?

3/27/2017 (Permalink)

Miicroscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

10 Tips for Fire Safety

11/15/2016 (Permalink)

  1. Watch your cooking
    1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
  2. Give space heaters space
    1. Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn.
    2. Turn off heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  3. Smoke outside
    1. Ask smokers to smoke outside. Have you sturdy, deep ashtrays for smokers.
  4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach
    1. Keep matches and lighters up high and out of children, preferably in a locked cabinet.
  5. Inspect electrical cords
    1. Replace cords that are cracked or damaged, have broken plugs, or have loose connections.
  6. Install smoke alarms
    1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
    2. Interconnect smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds they all sound.
  7. Have a home fire escape plan
    1. Make a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.
  8. Be careful when using candles
    1. Keep candles at least 1 food from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep
  9. Test smoke alarms
    1. Test smoke alarms at least once a month and replace batteries once a year or when the alarm “chirps” to tell you the battery is low. Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old.
  10. Install sprinklers
    1. If you are building or remodeling your home, consider installing a home fire sprinkler system. If moving into an apartment or condominium building, make sure common areas and individual apartments are sprinklered. Sprinklers can limit a fire and may even extinguish it in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive.

A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words

9/15/2016 (Permalink)

More times than not, when we get a call it is our client's home or business that has been impacted by flooding or fire damage. These cases become time sensitive so that our clients' lives can return back to normal.

A year ago, there was a flooding at a local daycare. Due to the damage the children had to be dispersed to other facilities. Wee were able to get the daycare back in operating condition quickly. When asked why we work so hard the following letter explains it far better than we could:

"I attached the note and drawing my son did for me. Thanks for all the help with our situation.  Just because it is your "job" and how you make a living doesn't mean you have to take extra steps to help people, but we definitely see the work you and you guys have done. So, THANKS A MILLION!"

SERVPRO Is the Best!

When you’ve had a plumbing disaster of epic proportions, there are only four words you want to hear. As I was about to dissolve in the three inches of standing water in my office, teary-eyed and shaking, SERVPRO of Newberry said those four words to me: “We can fix that.”

The upstairs toilet had not leaked, but spewed, through the night. The rug in the upstairs bedroom “squished” when you walked on it, and the floor was covered with water. The bedroom was directly above my office, and downstairs I discovered worse damage. It seemed to be raining from the ceiling fan, and rain was pouring from the corner. My heart sank. Old houses are hard, and we have an older home, built in 1924. The  molding around the ceiling was plaster, not wood, and it could not be replaced. The wall was plaster, too, again not easily replaced.

We called SERVPRO, fearing the worst. Still, I presented our “best case” scenario: could the house be cleaned up in a way that respected its history and the craftsmanship with which it was built. Essentially, we wanted the wall and the molding to be restored, not replaced with new materials.

Most folks would not have cared about maintaining the integrity of an old house. It would have been much easier to give us bad news, dry out the house in a couple of days, and move on. Mr. Kitchens did not choose the easy road: he listened, he researched, he monitored every day to check on how things were coming along.

We had called the plumber to fix the problem with the toilet, and the plumber said it was. After two weeks, though, Mr. Kitchens said we still had moisture in the wall. We called another plumber—and discovered the problem had not been addressed. Only SERVPRO of Newberry would have been so thorough and so caring about its customers, they would follow up and make sure our molding and our walls were protected from further damage.

SERVPRO does more than deal with plumbing disasters. They’ve also cleaned rugs for us, even eliminated pet odors and hair. “Great job,” is all I can say.

SERVPRO of Newberry knows what they’re doing. They are professionals who listen, who care, who go the extra mile to make sure the job is done promptly and beautifully. Outstanding people, outstanding work.  I would recommend SERVPRO of Newberry to anyone--even to my mother—and that means they’re the very best I know.
