It’s that time of year when you arrive to your works place and remember you flipped the switch to AC because it was warmer when you left the office and with the chilly mornings of Spring you need to turn some heat on to knock the chill off in the office. This time of year most all of us are making that switch and he HVAC units are working overtime from heat to air.  HVAC units suffer from regular wear and tear – without preventative maintenance you couldn’t possibly know about an issue big or small until it’s too late. Investing in a seasonal tune-up significantly decreases the chances of an unexpected repair.  We have listed a few steps to avoid HVAC repairs.

  • Have your air conditioner’s pressure checked.
  • Clean and replace filters and equipment
  • Test your thermostat often
  • Check doors and windows for any air leaks
  • Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries

Having your unit checked can help prevent repairs, air loss and potential home fires from faulty equipment. Be safe and prepare for warmer days ahead!

We all have that one co-worker who is always cold and must have the need to additional heat in their office space. Space heaters can keep you cozy during these cold days of winter, but they can also become a major hazard if used incorrectly. Space heaters cause about one-third of all winter fires Mostly caused by a space heater being too close to curtains or upholstered furniture. Follow these Space Heater Safety tips to help keep you and your coworkers safe this winter season.

  • Review all instructions and warning labels prior to setting up your space heater

Office spring cleaning – Electronic devices! This may be one of the most important ones of all! Think about it – your keyboard and mouse – the most touched item on your desk.  You never know how many crumbs that can accumulate in your keyboard. Unplug your keyboard and tap the back – wipe the keys and surfaces down with an alcohol wipe or disinfectant wipe.  Unplug the mouse and clean using the same method as the keyboard.  Duster air is also recommended to remove dust, lunch and snack crumbs. Use a microfiber cloth or cleaning wipes to remove dust from your monitor screen. Wipe down your desk and all surfaces that people are likely to touch every day – like your stapler – those are known to disappear.  Keeping a clean office space not only helps you from everyday germs – but also helps keep the task of Spring Cleaning to the minimum in your office space!

Clean and disinfect all surfaces – this includes the microwave and all the buttons, coffee maker, chairs and tables. Wipe down cabinets inside and out.  Check the fridge for any science projects - folks tend to leave forgotten leftovers in the fridge – that’s when you toss the entire container.  Clean and disinfect the entire refrigerator inside and out – but don’t forget to return items that someone is waiting to chow down on come lunch time. Water Removal from a buidling after a flood SERVPRO has you covered!

Commercial Water Damage

There are many ways that your office can flood, and as a business owner it’s important that you know what these are, what to do about it, and whom to call. Water damage is serious, and if you are not prepared or don’t have a plan in place when it happens to you, your business could be shut down for an unnecessary amount of time. Below is a list of a few water damage causes.

Extreme weather. Flooding can happen very quickly. What starts out as a small storm can suddenly turn into something larger and cause a lot more damage than anyone expected. If your commercial property or business resides in an older building, there is a chance that water damage will occur. For example, a small leak on the roof can turn into a flooding situation inside your business.

Damaged appliances. Most all office buildings have a kitchen or break room area with a refrigerator dishwasher and ice maker.  If one of these appliances fail, they can cause a significant amount of water damage to your business.

Backed up sewer lines. Bathrooms are another source of possible problems. It is not uncommon for the sewer lines to get backed up, releasing contaminated water into the building. This type of water damage is extremely dangerous because the water is filled with hazardous waste and other contaminants.

Broken pipes. Broken or cracked pipes are very common in commercial buildings, especially as they age. Always check your pipes under sinks and toilets for any leaks because once these lines bust – you have a major problem on your hands!

Ongoing maintenance to your commercial property is necessary to avoid water damage. But  water damage happens But you can trust that SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties will be there for you “Like it never even happened”

This holiday make your office smell good, not overpowering

12/4/2017 (Permalink)

Make your office appealing not overpowering by using aromatherapy.

We notice if something smells particularly bad or particularly good, but average smells don't usually generate a lot of notice. However, scent can actually affect your mood, for better or worse. That's why it's important to ensure that your office smells good, but not overpowering.

Deodorization and Odor Removal

The first step to making an office smell good is to sniff out the source of any negative odors. This can be surprisingly difficult, as the culprit might be hiding in the walls, ceiling, or floor. Here at SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties, we're pros at finding and eliminating the source of any negative odors.

Once we've determined what's causing an unpleasant odor in your office space, we use industry-leading deodorization methods to target and remove both the negative odor and its source.

Adding in Positive Scents

While removing an odor can make a huge difference in the smell of a space and on employees' moods, it often isn't enough. Olfactory bulbs, which are the parts of our body that process scents, have a direct effect on the parts of the brain which process emotion and learning. This means that adding positive scents to the office can make working there an incredibly pleasant experience, and can also function to improve productivity!

Scents proven to increase mood and focus are:

Lemon, Jasmine, Rosemary, Peppermint

  • Lemon can promote concentration and produce calming effects. It also contains natural antibacterial properties, which can be a lifesaver for offices!
  • Jasmine has been shown to lift your mood by producing feelings of confidence and increasing optimism and energy.
  • Rosemary helps to improve focus and clarity as well as fighting physical tiredness – great effects for a workplace to have.
  • Peppermint increases concentration, focus, and acts as an energy booster to help you come up with brilliant ideas.

Just be careful not to overdo any aromatherapy, as too much scent in the workplace can cause productivity to drop or irritate allergies.

If you have a need for odor removal or deodorization services in the Newberry or Laurens area, SERVPRO of Newberry and Laurens Counties has the technical experience, know-how, and professional savvy to make your office smell brand new again. Contact us today to see how we can help your business smell its best!
