September is National Preparedness Month – this annual campaign is held every September to remind and promote families and communities to be prepared for disasters and emergency situations.

This year’s theme is “Start a Conversation”

Talking about potential disasters or emergency situations that could happen is not always easy – especially when it comes to your children. Having a plan in place and reassuring your family that you have a plan in place in the event of a disaster will help ease your mind and keep your family safe, calm and more comfortable. Helping them understand that they play a very important role in the planning will encourage your family to all have a plan in place.

  • Gather Important Documents and keep them in a safe accessible place.
  • Build your emergency kit.
  • Have an Evacuation Plan
  • Prepare your home inside and out.
  • Plan for power outages
  • Stay up to date on weather alerts.

September is the most active month of Hurricanes, fall like temperatures may fool you but storms are more active during this time. Be prepared and stay safe.

Is HVAC Maintenance Important?

7/24/2024 (Permalink)

Maintenance person working on an HVAC unit Routine maintenance being completed on an HVAC unit.

Here in the South, we have experienced extremely hot temperatures over the past several weeks – with a heat index over 100 degrees. With the hot temperatures your HVAC unit is working overtime to keep you home cool.

Regular prevented maintenance is crucial to the health and efficiency of your system. Much like driving your car, would you continue to drive your car without changing the oil? Same concept. A trained technician will clean and evaluate your system to ensure it is operating efficiently. Costs will be lower and the quality of air your breath will be higher.

Having routine maintenance will reduce your annual cost of electricity and extend the life of your system. Change your filters inside your home monthly – make a reminder when you pay your monthly electric bill – it is time to change the filters. This will also help the efficiency of your HVAC unit and help control the dust and allergens inside your home.

Enjoy summer and make sure your HVAC unit will not leave you in the heat!

Septic System vs Rain

3/6/2024 (Permalink)

Homeowner getting their septic tank pumped out Septic tank being pumped out due to overflow

Our region has experienced more rain over the past few weeks than we might see in an entire summer season. Winter is unpredictable and the added rain we have experienced is well over the norm. The over saturated ground may have taken a toll on your septic system, but there will be signs so make sure you are being proactive to avoid sewer backup inside your home.

  • Do you have standing water over your septic?
  • Do you smell sewage in your yard?
  • Do your pipes make unusual sounds when you flush the toilet?
  • Do you see sewage backup in your bathtubs or sinks?

If you should experience any of the above occurrences, you need to call a plumber to have your lines checked – it could be a full septic tank or a clogged drain line. Having your lines inspected can save you the inconvenience of having a major sewer backup inside your home.

Back-to-school season is a busy yet exciting time for both parents and students. However, it’s also important to remember safety.  By following these back-to-school safety tips you can help ensure that your kids stay safe throughout the school year.

  • Bus Safety – if your child rides the bus to school walk the route several times prior to the start of the school year. Arrive at least 5 minutes before the pickup time and stay away from the road until the bus arrives.
  • Commuting your child to school – pay close attention to school zones – flashing lights and posted speed limits. Watch for crossing guards. Never pass a stopped school bus and be prepared for heavy traffic during drop off and pick up times.
  • Timing is key – leaving your house early can prevent a meltdown happening for you and your kids. Keeping a structured routine during school days can relieve stress for everyone.
  • Pack a Snack – have a snack packed for the afternoon commute home – a hungry kid equals a stressed-out parent.

Embrace this time and enjoy the milestones and memories you are making with your children. Time is a thief and although this may be stressful for everyone, having a plan and being prepared will make life a whole lot easier.  Have a great – safe school year!

Thanksgiving Turkey ready to serve Happy Thanksgiving Turkey!

We are a little over a week away from the kickoff to the Holiday Season – Thanksgiving. The shopping cooking and family time is here to celebrate all for which we are Thankful! Preparing for your feast is key to a successful Thanksgiving Dinner for you and your family! There are several ways to thaw a frozen turkey so pick the best scenario that works best for you.

Three Ways to Thaw a Turkey

  • Refrigerator – the safest way - depending on the size of your turkey it is safe to thaw your turkey in the refrigerator for 1 -2 days (24 hours for every 5lbs of turkey. This is the safest way to thaw your bird – as it can remain in the refrigerator up to two days before cooking. So basically, you can start thawing your bird the Friday before Thanksgiving.
  • Cold Water – Submerge the turkey in cold water and drain and refill cold water every 30 minutes. if you decide to use this method the turkey must be cooked immediately after thawing.
  • Microwave – use the defrost method based on the weight of the turkey. Again, you must cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

No matter the method of your turkey cooking – our wish is your Thanksgiving Dinner is filled with love and fellowship as we enter the most wonderful time of the year.

Fireworks in the Sky Fireworks on the 4th of July

July is almost here and many families are gearing up for the upcoming July 4th Holiday weekend. With food – family – fun and fireworks. It’s a special time of year as we celebrate the passage of the Declaration of Independence with our family and friends.  Fireworks are used in almost every celebration but if you have pets – its not so much fun for our 4-legged family friends.  The noise and unpredictability of fireworks may lead many dogs into a panic or anxiety.  Preparing your home and outings with pets can help reduce some of the stress. It is best to leave your dog at home in a safe quiet room or turn on the television. Don’t bring your dog to see the fireworks – and if you must – make sure their collars are secure and microchips are up to date. Remember fireworks can be scary for your pets – leave them at home to assure their well being and safety.

Can I plant some flowers??

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Spring Flowers growing in a field. The sign of Spring is here!

When can you start planting flowers for Spring?

The days are getting longer and finally getting warmer – we experienced some crazy weather here in the South throughout the month of April and we have all had to dress accordingly but let’s hope we are now over the cold hump and morning frost are over for the year.

Most gardeners will advise that it is ok to starting planting flowers after Mother’s Day. I am sure most of us have heard this from our own parents and grandparents over the years, but the truth is they are spot on!  Mother’s Day in many climate zones signifies late Spring, and for most the start of planting annuals and hanging your ferns.  Before picking out your favorites flowers for planting make sure evaluate the sun and shade levels around your home and planting area and pick flowers that will be sure to add that pop of color after a long dreary winter. Happy Planting and Hello Sweet Summertime!

4/8/2021 (Permalink)

Wet fallen leaves on the ground The leaves of Fall can grow into mold in the Spring.

Spring temperatures are getting warmer and yard work is in full swing over the past couple of weeks.  Planting season is only weeks away so getting a good start on spring yard cleanup will have you yard of the month ready come May. Be cautious of leaves during clean up. Many forms of mold grow and live-in grass, on rotting logs, compost piles and falling leaves left on the ground and trapped in your gutters. While they do not die with the first frost like several other allergens, they lay dormant during the winter. In the spring, they grow on plants that were killed by the winter's cold temperatures. Even on their own, fallen leaves will still grow mold. If you are cleaning up this Spring from the leaves of Fall - Wear gloves and a protective mask - this will help protect you from contact to mold that may be growing from the leaves of Fall.

Time to Check your Gutters

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Gutter full of leaves and debris This gutter needs to be cleaned out of leaves and debris.

Every homeowner has a list of things to do before winter starts to set in.  Cleaning your gutters and removing all leaves and debris should be at the top of your list.  In most areas of the South – leaves begin to fall towards mid to end of September and continue for many weeks.  The weather can change daily so if you notice your gutters starting to fill up – get started early. Late fall storms can roll up anytime and remember we are still in Hurricane Season. If your gutter and downspouts are blocked with leaves – heavy rainwater may not drain properly and cause water to back up. This could cause water damage to your home both inside and out. Inspect you gutters and downspouts until all the leaves have fallen this can save you money in the long run.

Halloween Pumpkins Pumpkin carvings for Trick or Treating

Halloween and Covid-19

Oh, what a year it has been – with all the rules and stay at home regulations everyone is ready to get back to some sort of normality – so what does this mean for all the little ghosts, goblins and trick or treating?

This all depends on your area – and the rules aligned with the CDC. Many traditional Halloween activities can be a high-risk and should be avoided. Safer and alternative ways to celebrate the festivities of Halloween are being recommended, so let’s list a few –

  • Carving or painting pumpkins with family members or neighbors outside
  • Halloween scavenger hunt
  • Putting on a Virtual Halloween costume contest
  • Decorate your house and let the children vote on the best scary festive home in the neighborhood
  • Leave a bowl of candy outside for trick or treaters

Adults and children have had to make so many adjustments over the past several months so being safe and celebrating safely can still make a fun and scary Halloween for all.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers found in women – but the survival rate is getting higher each year because women are getting mammograms done yearly and early detection is key as doctors can begin treatment.

Check your local community for fundraising activities – get involved in promoting awareness – wear pink and encourage your family and friends to get involved to help raise awareness. Together we can do great things!

Heat Pump/Furnace Maintenance

With the official kick off the Fall season; now is the time to prepare your home for the colder weather that awaits us all! Most of the US has seen temperatures already beginning to drop lower than normal for this time of year – which most may indicate an early winter – so making plans now can save your family from costly repairs.

Have your heat pump/furnace checked and inspected prior to flipping that switch over to heat mode. Scheduling this maintenance now could save you from a long line of customers waiting for repairs during the coldest time of the year.  The demand for technicians is much higher and the wait time is much longer during peak season – schedule an appointment now to avoid being cold this winter.

National Preparedness Month

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Clouds and being prepared Are you prepared?

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). This is recognized every year in September to prepare and promote family and community disaster planning now.  This was introduced in 2004 and is observed each September in the United States.  SERVPRO has joined with other agencies such at the American Red Cross, The Weather Channel, and the EPA to promote safety and disaster preparedness for families across the country.

Disasters have no boundaries – everyone is subject to a disaster but being prepared can be a matter of life and death. Being prepared and having a plan is essential for the safety of you and your family. Depending on the type of planning caring for you family and belongings should be your first priority. Follow your local news channels, have extra food and water on hand.  Keep important documents such as insurance policies, birth certificates and important paper documents in a safe area that is easily accessible.   Most of all be prepared!

Decorated Christmas Tree in a family home Decorating for Christmas

It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas and that means let the decorating begin! While all your Christmas Cheer has been packed up for the summer it’s that time of year when we pull out the decorations and begin decorating our homes for the Holiday Season. Inspect all your electrical decorations and lights to make sure there are no lose, frayed or disconnected wires. Inspect electrical drop cords and power strips for any broken sockets or loose connections. Inspect electrical outlets outside to make sure no insects or critter have set up a residence.  Keep live trees away from any heat source and make sure you check your tree daily to ensure proper hydration.  Live trees are highly flammable, due to needles and sap. If you chose an artificial tree, make sure it is fire resistant. It’s the most wonderful time of the year so be safe and enjoy this special time with family and friends.

A burning campfire surround by rocks to help contain the fire Camping and campfires go together!

Fall has been around a couple of weeks, but we are just starting to feel the season go into full cooling force which makes for a perfect time to build a warm fire on a chilly night.  Whether you’re at a campsite or your own backyard it is important to understand the fire laws in your area as well as campfire safety precautions. Be prepared for your next outing by following these safety tips to ensure everyone has an enjoyable night.

Safety should be your top priority – Fires are unpredictable so containing them is key. In campgrounds there are usually designated fire rings or grills provided.  Use them to keep the fire contained and away from trees, bushes and your tent or camper. If there are no ring available place rocks around the outside, dig a hole at least 6 inches deep and 2 feet across – keep the dirt around the pit. Make sure there is only dirt around you fire location. Have a bucket of water on hand – Just in case!  Never leave the fire unattended and when its time for lights out .. make sure your fire is completely out before hitting the hay!

Avoid Electrical Outlet Overload

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

overloaded electrical outlet Electrical outlet overload

We are all guilty of this at times especially with the smart phone and tablets that make our life easier we have chargers in almost every room in the house with multiple functions for charging our devices, however it is very important (more so in older homes) that we don’t overload the circuit because you could be setting the stage for an electrical fire. Some warning signs of an electrical overload circuit is flickering lights, burning smell and tripping circuits. A hot electrical outlet is a sign of trouble and should be attended to immediately. Find the circuit breaker that controls that outlet and turn it off, unplug all devices that were plugged into the outlet and call a professional to check the outlet.  Testing your charging cords can also determine if it’s the actual cord or the outlet. Keep your home and family safe!
